| I did a search on Avet reels and saw that alot of guys are using the MX reels for big blades and was wondering if anyone had a JX reel? I am afflicted with a left hand retrieve and wanted something similar to a Trinidad and the JX seems to be the closest.
It looks like a single speed JX 6.0:1 ratio reel will do 42" per crank of line and provide 14-15 pounds of drag on the strike and can be adjusted down to 20lbs and weighs about 20 ounces. I looked at the "raptor" series and that provides a better drag system and is 2 speed but it is more expensive and it seems like overkill.
A couple of questions:
1) Does anyone have one of these reels? Do you like it?
2) What size braid would you use and why?
3) What rod would you put it on? Why? I am thinking the Big Nasty right now...
4) Does anyone know of a better setup for burning blades (mostly 10's) similar to the Trinidad speed for a left hand retrieve guy?
Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Location: Detroit River | My musky/sturgeon fishing buddy has a MXL 6/4 MC & a JX raptor & he plans on buying another one before the season opens. He loves them so much that he makes his wife sleep on the couch so he can have some alone time with his Avets.
He has 80 Lb braid on the JX & not sure what he has on the other. He needs to upgrade his rods IMO because he's using Ugly Sticks right now. |

| I've had a JX-MC 6.0:1 for a couple years now. It is an awesome big blade reel. It picks up 46"/crank, but closer to 40" when spooled correctly. I have only used 80 lb. Stren Round braid and it has worked pretty good. I put mine on a 9'6" XH and I love the set-up. I think the Big Nasty would be a good choice, but I would only use the JX for blades. I have tried to throw mag dawgs and pounders with it, but the slack line ripping dawgs creates doesn't go back onto the spool very well. The constant resistance of blades will spool the line perfectly. With these reels not having a levelwind, it is critical to get an MC (Master Cast) model...it will make your life much easier. I have also heard recently that it's a good idea to get your AVET magged. Mine isn't and it works great, but that's also something you may want to look into. But, as far as lefties throwing blades, there is no better SPEED set-up than AVETs out there right now. |
