here is the response to my inquiry. without hooks and rings it is like $1.29 or something...this sucks..

Jason,

I am sorry to disappoint you with the new pricing. Efective 2/10/2011, Drifter Tackle set all blank lure pricing to reflect a 10% discount off of the painted baits across the board. Any Drifter Tackle, Musky Mania, of E.R.C. blank with hooks, split rings, and packaging will reflect this 10% price. Without hooks, split rings, and packaging, the discount will be a bit more.

Regards,
Drifter Tackle Support

they must have had declining sales due to custom painters??? i dunno just a guess....well it sucks cause the price just went up 5bucks for the custom baits now too in the hellhound.

I doubt it was because of custom painters, If a company is good, why would a custom painter be a threat?
Anyway, with a custom painter, you can take any of your old hellhounds and have them custom painted cheaper than a new blank custom done. Most custom painters are only out to make a couple extra bucks not a killing.
If it were the other way around, one could not afford custom painting with all the work and special efforts they have to put into it.

Hang on and get used to it guys. Its just the way it is nowdays. Greed is taking over on everything. I used to make some small baits from dowel stock. I bought a few in Oct or Nov. @ $1.07 ea. In January I went to buy a few more dowels and the same product went from $1.07 per dowel to @2.56 per dowel in one jump. Almost a 150% increase. Wow now thats greed. I emailed the place where I got the dowels and they said they would check into it. Thats the last I heard. The last time I was there they were still at $2.56 so now I don't got there anymore. I looked a few other places but the stock they carry is from china. A 3/4" dowel goes anywhere from 5/8" to 7/8". There is no quality there. Gas, food and everything else is going way over board. The only thing not going up are the wages. We are going backwards bigtime.

I don't think it's greed, I'm sure drifter has their reasons.

I would be better off leaving this alone I know it...but I see this same picture on a wide variety of things I buy. The global economy which we are under is not the same as we are used to. A good example was the last unemployment report that came out. The results better than expected did the stock market move, no. Why? unrest in the middle east. It's weird and it's new and it goes as far as Muskie baits, screws, iinserts, plastics, colorants, inks...on & on. Doesn't help a bit I know, but it is a glimpse of the times we're in.

The American way guys, When gas goes up so does everything else. I agree with " Me" it is greed that drives the prices.

Kodiak, You will just have to ask the company that question.
Normally, when I buy a blank from a company, I charge 2 to 3 dollars more than their intended retail price, so as not to cause competition with them but it also covers any waste involved in only painting a couple at a time, plus the cost of most of the expensive paints and pigments I use.
I don't offer up plastic customs that cost a ridicules blank price to start with.
