Posts: 1185 Location: Wishin I Was Fishin' | Generalizing but it seems most show vendors don't like swaps? I would think they would take advantage of it as a socializing opportunity if nothing else. There are a few vendors that do go but overall it seems like most don't like it. I don't know if they think a swap is taking away from show sales? or if they just don't want to deal with musky stuff after a full day of it or what? I guess if you just do it for a job and not the passion I could see it being like me not bringing my work home, but I strugle to believe that most musky show vendors don't have the passion of the musky. I have just as much fun if not more talking with people at the swap. Any ideas or discussion?

Posts: 32922 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Some folks don't have an accurate idea what the Chicago and Milwaukee swaps are really about. Fear is the swaps cost sales on the floor, and draw people away from the show. Quite a bit of the money made on Saturday night selling used lures ends up spent at the show Sunday. It's a few hundred out of of thousands attending the shows who attend the swaps, and as much for the fun and social interaction as the 'deals' on used tackle or lack thereof. And...the swaps are after show hours, not during. The swaps don't hurt commerce at the shows and are fun to attend.

one reason they dont go as was the case in chicago this year. was the show organizers threw a vendor party at the same time as the swap.

Posts: 8824 | Swap = proverbial sh*t filter. If your lures suck, there will be one for sale at every table for $5. If they are worth the money, you'll be lucky to find one at all. If someone buys one of your lures at the swap, and it actually works? They will buy more. FROM YOU. Seems to me the only people threatened by swap meets are those who sell junk for way too much money, and make their business selling lures to stupid people who will buy anything. If your lures are worth what you charge for them, the swap meets mean nothing.

I like the swap meets but I usually haven't had dinner and I am pooped by the end of the show. By the time I grab some dinner and relax the swaps are usually winding down. Anything that promotes fishing is a good thing. Mike Mordas Muskie Train

Posts: 880 Location: New Berlin,Wisconsin,53151 | If you remember the 1st couple swaps they were nothing but a social gathering. Most of the people who worked the show would come to the swap and have a chance to talk to friends over a cocktail or 2, the lures and equipment were secondary. But now it's seems your seeing more of the bait makers showing up to sell or promote, and the amount of used equipment is doubled. I think it's great and shouldn't hurt the show at all in fact it's a chance to bring more anglers into the fold. Bruce

Posts: 3156 | It could be just has simple has they just want a 'break' from everything musky related for a while. at least thats what one well know angler told me when we invited him to the Minn show swap,,and to be honest with you I think alot of these guys just get 'hammered' on for donations to causes even if their good causes Im sure it gets a little old after a while Edited by happy hooker 2/15/2011 6:57 AM

Posts: 191 Location: WV | I agree with Mordas (even though it pains me). Don't sleep well away from home, arrive early to reset, long day on your feet, late dinner, etc. And one of the best things about shows is the socializing, and putting faces with emails and phone calls. JW

Posts: 1270 | It also depends on what vendor it is. If the vendor is selling stuff out of his booth then it's fine but if the vendor has dealers at the show selling their product then it would be a bad business policy to sell at a swap. Plus after setting up and being at the show for an entire weekend they just like to have some down time. For many of you this is a once a year thing, for the vendors it's every weekend!

I have added a Lure Swap to follow Musky Road Rules Buffalo on March 5th at the Holiday Inn Resort Grand Island,NY on the Niagara River.I will keep a close eye to see if adding the Lure Swap adds to the number signing up for Musky Road Rules as well.I also think that Lure Swaps help bring more people to the muskie shows and those who made money at those Lure Swaps spend most of the money the made at the muskie show. Posts: 667 Location: Roscoe IL | If it were not for the swap meet after the show, I would not have traveled and attended the show at all. Its more than a swap meet for some, its a social event as well. The show can be like this as well, but the swap meets don't have a sales pitch behind each lure. Some guys do, but it's just a different environment and way more relaxing. Not to mention the big party in the bar following. My god was it a blast this year, everyone is so generous and fun by then. I couldn't get my wallet out fast enough before another beer was in my hand paid for. There are some very cool people out there!

Location: Illinois | I can vouch that money made at the swap does indeed get transferred to more show purchases, and if I know I won't return to the show on Sunday, I spend more at the show on Saturday before the swap begins. The swap is the highlight of the weekend for me, it's like digging for gold as opposed to buying gold through a jeweler. I think the swap and the show have a symbiotic relationship. The swap couldn't exist without the show, and the swap allows consumers a chance to earn moneys for new lures at the show! And if it does somehow hurt the show , here's a tissue, the promoters of the swap organize charitable drives which make a difference in people's lives! I cannot see how it adversely affects show attendance, I'd figure over 90% of swap attendees also attend the show.
