Why do people believe that the normal lower cost round reels are not well suited for large rubber? What I have found is the only problem is casting them and once they are in the water it makes little difference to me what reel I am using unless it is a slow gear ratio so I cant pick up the slack fast enough. Is there something I am missing?

Care to elaborate? I have had backlashes with my 6501 c3s and with my cardiff and have had no issues after.

Posts: 1270 | What's a backlash? LOL! I kind of agree with the first poster as I do not find the big rubber baits that hard to retrieve, in fact they are some of the easier baits to retrieve. But then again I don't find DC10's all that hard to retrieve either unless you are trying to burn them. I think a lot of people want to make musky fishing sound like some extreme sport so they constantly talk about how hard it is. It isn't as easy as perch fishing but it's not marlin fishing either!

Posts: 8824 | Being serious for a moment... The biggest advantage to the larger reels is that they make things easier for the person using them. No, it's not Marlin fishing. But look around your club. By and large, muskie anglers are not the youngest most athletic bunch by any stretch. Now, I'm over 40 and getting fatter by the month, so I'm not saying I'm in the best shape of my life, either. But take a look around at people. Bad knees, bad hips, bad backs, spare tires... Most of the guys who can afford muskie fishing make their living behind a desk. Two hours in the car, 8 behind a desk, a few more in front of the TV... Comapred to jigging for walleyes, muskie fishing is like running a marathon. Sooo, if you laugh when someone complains about how tough muskie fishing is? My guess is you're under 30. EVERYTHING is easy when you're under 30. I'll tell you the same thing I tell my girlfriend on a weekly basis: "Wait 10 years, and THEN tell me how you feel!"

Posts: 175 Location: Tonka, MN | From what I've heard from other people on the forums is that the gears aren't suited for it. Personally I find no problem in it. I have blown out an Abu C4 but that was before I was throwing big rubbers.

Posts: 2427 Location: Ft. Wayne Indiana | In my opinion, it's not about the "size" of the reel, but the reel quality. I have use almost every traditional sized baitcasting reel out there...some lasted a few hours, some lasted a few days, some last for months for me. The higher end reels like the Calcutta TE and the Calcutta LJV have lasted me the longest, where as the $100 to $225 dollar reels haven't lasted me very long when ripping and jerking large rubber baits.

Posts: 1270 | addict, I wish I remembered what being 30 felt like! I start off my day of musky fishing with 1000mg of ibuprophen!!! The larger reels do offer an advantage of being easier to retrieve with but they also come at a price of being heavier to hold all day long. It's a choice that one has to decide for themself I guess. I used a 7000 a couple years ago for one day of musky fishing and hated using a reel that big. I told myself that if I needed a reel that big to catch muskys I would be switching to bluegill fishing! I can't even imagine throwing a Trinidad, bigger Saltist, or Avet all day long. By no means am I saying that those aren't good reels, they're just physically to big for my tastes.

Posts: 582 | I agree. Throwing large rubber is not really an issue for me on most reels. Big blades are a different story. Try cranking in a dbl 10 on a cardiff and then try it on a Toro winch. There is just a big difference. Other than large blades thou, i can use just about any reel.

Posts: 393 Location: Hopefully on the water | Some of those reels are fine for some people. it all depends on how you fish, how much you fish, your budget, and what you want. I has some older 6500 Garcia's that were built like tanks and wish I had never gotten rid of them. That is not to say that the more affordable reels do not work. Along with that after using some other reels that were more money their is a difference on how smooth the retrives are on some reels. They seem to take less effort.
