For those of you who have fished with both of these reels for big blades, which one do you like better?

A buddy and I did LOTW for 8 days last year and I threw both reels during that trip. I prefer the Winch. It was more comfortable in my hand and really easy pulling those baits. Not to mention you can save a few beans along the way. I can't talk to the durability as I only have one year on my Winch. Just my $.02

Depends on how you want to fish blades and what model TE you are talking about. The biggest thing with blades is having a reel that's got speed. As far as speed with TEs go, the 700 TE would allow you to get SOME speed (31 in./turn), but yet be versatile enough to ease the stress of cranking and also slow down a bit at night. A 400 TE won't get you the speed (25 in./turn), but will also ease the stress of cranking and again is a great night blade reel. A winch is a bad choice for a reel if you want speed. If you want power (easy cranking), a Winch is good, but it isn't very versatile and I just don't trust low-profile reels (really, Abus in general) for big blades. Both the 700 and 400 TE have great power as well, but I feel they are better big rubber/night blade reels. If you are stuck on getting one of these, get the 700 TE, but by far your best bet for a dynamite blade reel will be a Trinidad or Saltist.

On some days Muskies want the DCG10-13 FAST TRINIDAD FAST, thats about 10% of the time, so way buy a 20oz plus reel to fish all the time with ????? Buy a ABU TORO 50/60 10.8oz in 4.6:1 to fish with 90% of the time and if you want to get a Trinidad 16NA with 46" of line pickup to fish the 10% of the time that the Muskies want it fast. The 400TE is 12.8oz with 5.1:1 gears and is a very good all aroud reel. The Toro comes in 2 sizes and 3 gear sizes, pickup a Toro and see how it fits in your hand, then try the 300 or 400TE round reel and see how it fits your hand and buy the one U like.

I went with a Toro 60 last year and the first thing I did is wish I had bought a 50. So this year they are going to be tried side by side. One of them will be the lead horse for more to come. My hand did not cramp up throwing big blades for 3-4 hours straight. That never was the case with any of my round reels!

Fish want blades FAST much more than 10% of the time...that's just my experience anyway. During 2009, for 2.5 months straight, the only way we could catch them is if we burned blades absolutely as fast as we could. You may not be reeling fast enough...

I think what PIKEMASTER was trying to say was that a FAST double 10-13 is what they want 10% of the time of fishing - for the year as a whole. As in, if you put the whole season together, from small spinners & cranks, to fast blades, to deep rubber, deep cranks, to live bait, to trolling.

Yea I understand that. I'm just saying my experience has been a lot different than 10% of the entire season. I'm reaching for my high-speed blade reel most of the time, from mid-june until the water cools down. The lake I primarily fish gets a lot of pressure, and burning blades is incredibly effective, as the fish seem to just react to the thing flying past them. Every lake is different though, so by no means am I saying I'm right and he's wrong, just sharing what my experience has been.

I own both reels, and Trinidad 16N. in my opinion if I had to buy them all over again for blades I would pick the Winch for days they don't want speed and at night...and the Trinidad 16N for other times...I use the Trinidad about 80-90% of the time during the day from the start of the season to fall...Winch maybe 10% of the time during the day and 100% of the time at night... The TE is a good reel but overpriced imo and mine went back to Shimano 3 x in 2 yrs... so they aren't exactly bulletproof for a $350 reel.... my 2 cents.

I have around 3-4 rod and reel setups in the boat with me in the daytime. The low speed reel like a Toro is great at night and you can use it in the daytime also, the Trinidad is what U want in the daytime when the Muskies want speed. So start out with a Toro or TE and then get yourself a Trinidad if the lakes you fish want a DCG10-13 burned. Then U you will want a 6.4:1 reel for Topwater and a TE700 for Dawgs, Muskie fishing is not cheap anymore.
