| This is especially true with heavy wire leaders, and 7 strand to a point. Even using Flourocarbon, which is supposed to be neutrally bouyant, you still have the weight of the snap and the swivel. I've noticed that it's much more of an issue with smaller lures, most notably small jerkbaits and gliders.
One thing you can do is to eliminate the use of snaps and just use a quality split ring. I've also experimented with using about a 36" flurocarbon leader tied directly to your braid using a double uni knot. A lot of guys do that, and I suppose on pressured/clear waters that's probably a safe bet. But personally, I can't stand the feeling and the noise of the knot going through your guides. That is, however, the best way in my opinion to get the best action out of lures where you don't want to weight of the leader pulling the nose of the bait down. The swivel really doesn't do much except prevent line twist. I've never found that to be a problem unless you get a bait that's fouled and just spins around and around on the retrieve. That said, tying flouro to braid does make me nervous. But guys who catch a lot more fish than me do it sucessfully. That's got to count for something. |
