Has anyone held this new reel from abu garcia, the alphamar??
I saw it on the new catalog, and it looks pretty interesting. Any feedback yet?

i have a buddy that works at gander mtn, he got one i threw it some, very nice reel for the money. nice power handle, lightweight, and works gret as a trolling reel or throwing big stuff. i will most likely get one.

The Alphamar comes in 3 sizes, the 12 is the smallest and weights 17.7oz and has a drag of 27lbs, but only has a 4.3:1 gears, which means this reel only has a line pickup of 26.6 with a full spool. Retails for $149.00.

I used a couple this past summer for trolling for salmon and was pretty impressed with it. It would work good enough for casting for muskys but to be honest it's to big for me. I know a lot of guys are using Trinidads, Saltists, etc. but these are just to big and not fun to use IMHO.

That reel is a powerhouse. Great for large rubber or trolling.

If you like the AlphaMar take a look at the Penn Fathom, same basic reel only built even tougher!
