here is my dilema. i've had my avet sx 2 speed for two seasons now which i bought for cranking db 10's. is it a lighter weight lever drag reel that i can palm easily...yup. is it a super heavy duty reel...yup. does it crank db 10's with ease at incredible speed...yup. my "problem" is that i've got it on a croix legend big dawg and although that rod performs perfect for me in the figure 8 (very little loading with db 10's which is what i prefer) my casting distance is no where near what i think it should / could be. is it that i haven't learned how to get max distance with how i have the reel "set up" or is it the rod? can anyone with experience with both the croix big dawg and the big nasty say that the big nasty is "what i am looking for" as far as non-figure 8 loading combined with better casting distance? if the big nasty is not my answer then what 8 1/2' plus rod out there is? or, for those that have an avet, is it that i haven't yet "learned" the reel?
thanks...

I have an Avet MXL in a lefty which is a little different than the one you are talking about. I really like the reel as I'm sure you do. I have had the reel on a lighter rod and had decent casting distance with both double tens and spinner baits. The problem I experienced was that I felt I didn't get a good hook set in the "8". I tried both the 9' tackle industries rod in the XX heavy and XXX heavy ( I think I have that right. It think James calls them the super D rod and the Mega D rod. ) Anyhow I lost a little distance going to the XX and a lot of distance going to the XXX stiff. I have used the XX heavy rod on the reel for about two years and like that combo. I have put both a right hand saltist and a right hand tekota on the rods and both cast a fair amount farther than the Avet reel will. If they ever made a saltist in a lefty I would probably go that route. If your like me you probably really like the way the Avet free spools or reel disengage works on boat side hits. They are also very ergo dynamic for my smaller hands.

So In my opinion your cast distance is likely partly the Avet reel and partly the rod you are using. I am not familiar with your rods mentioned. With my current Avet MXL I cast Rad Dogs and mini Glittertails all the way up to the big Glittertails. There is obviously more distance gained on the bigger Glittertails than the mini's. Also double ten Glittertails in my opinion cast a little farther, especially in the wind than most standard double ten designs which may help you a bit in distance but is not a likely not a solve all.

Hope the info helps.

Something to keep in mind is the ability to set the hook on a fish in the figure 8. I was at Eagle a couple of years ago and my buddy was using a lighter action rod and he kept missing fish in the 8 (welcome to Eagle Lake) and the guide changed him to a heavier action rod and he was able to get a better hookset. My experience with double tens is that a really long cast isn't always a good thing. The Big Nasty that is coming out from St. Croix sounds like it might be a good rod and I would also look at some of the heavier action Musky Innovation rods. Good luck!

the TI rods are the bomb.. you will be inpressed with them and the mega would be a better choice than the mag but both are awsome rods.. you wont be upset with either one of them....bill
