Over a year ago my uncle gave me his box of musky stuff from when he was younger. Some of them look pretty old and I have not seen anything like them. Obviously the one bucktail is a Mepps but it has a weird blade style and keel weight. The bucktail in the last pic is pretty cool, different style of double blades. The blades say Hildebrandt and one is a 3.5 and other is #4.

Please help identify these:

If you would have read this. Dam. I already know what it is, I more or less posted that one because it is very unique. And the last bucktail is a Hildebrandt of some sort - that says right on the blade too.

Opps I wwas wrong - Its a Hi-Fin Splashtail
Length - 7" Weight - 1 3/4 oz.
Spashtail has been improved by adding a .40 stainless steel wire on the front end to help stabilize the bait, so the tail breaks the water more frequently. Retrieve just fast enough so tail breaks water.

The splashtails, if it wood, is a nice lure.(you can tell by the painted eyes, the poly-wood ones have "bug" eyes). I copied the description from the Hi-Fin web site.

I checked the Mepps web site and they don't make those weight forward bucktails anymore but I remember them in the 90s so that isn't that old. It was meant as a countdown for deeper fish and I'm sure they got the idea from Dearie Eries.

Thanks for the info.

I have tried casting that Mepps a couple times and you are definitely right that it is meant for deeper water. The thing casts like a bullet too.
I've never thrown the old double bladed Hildebrandt tail just because it looks like an antique.
The crankbait is quite cool too.

The crank baits wa known as a 'Killer Bait' we sold 3", 4" 6" and 8" versions in the UK. But, a long time ago, worked great. As far as I know they were made in California as a sideline for a air conditioning company, originally for saltwater fishing. They were available in two styles regular and drop belly as in picture, tough plastic with the decal on the inside stuck to some foam.

I remember when I was in high school, my dad had some of the Lusox Mepps. It was a summer buck for big pike when they started to descend to the cooler water. We were in northern manitoba in '87 and we were the only boat catching any over 40 inches. Everyone was throwing giant killers and #5's in the weeds and rocks - they were sticking snot rocket after snot rocket. We finally moved out over a deeper water reef and my dad snapped on that bait. I was a skeptic since I was a 15 yr old smart azz and I didn't think the old man had a clue. It wasn't long, and I was snapping one on as well. I remember that trip we caught several between 41 and 45 and tons in the 38-41 inch range. It was a blast and a great learning experience!

Hildebrant is the name of the blade, not the bucktail. Could be a homemade bait w/ Hildebrant blades.

Does the bait with the Hildebrant blades have an egg sinker on the wire before the last hook? If so I may know who tied it. He normally used 1/4 oz eggs on the back end.

The Hildebrandt tail does not have an egg sinker or weight of any kind. Only the blades and spacers.

The last one is a Whoppertail, possibly made by Brian Long.

The Mepps Lusox was discontinued simply because it was way ahead of it’s time, and not many knew how to fish it, or should I saw where. Meant for deeper water, and being a weight forward spinner the blade will spin on the drop. Back in the time of the Lusox not a lot of guys fished suspended let alone with bucktails. While today there are more people doing it there still aren’t a lot of guys that know how to fish varying depths of the column with anything other than maybe a bulldawg of Big Joe.

Also by deeper water I should maybe clarify and just say deeper in the water column. Meaning running that bad boy near the bottom in 10-15’ of water.

I am glad I have several of the Lusox yet!
