I recently watched my dad lose a really nice musky while using a Salmo Skinner Size 15 because the fish straightened a hook out. I was wondering how many of you that use this lure change out the hooks and what size and brand you switch them out with. Thanks.

I always change the hooks on the skinner. I use 4/0 9626 vmc on the 15. I believe it comes with 2/0 or 3/0 hooks. On the bigger skinner I use 5/0 vmc 9626 hooks. I always try to put the biggest hooks on any lure I get without them fouling or affecting the action too much. I like the way the bigger hooks on the skinner weigh the lure down so it doesn't pop up so fast, allowing the musky a better chance to attack it.

Awesome. Thanks for the reply. I have some 4/0 vmc hooks on stand-by, I just wasn't sure if they would be too much hook for the lure action. I will give it a shot.

I know that the original hooks in the Salmo Skinner 15 are VMC 1 / 0 black nickel. They are strong, but sometimes not enough. Sometimes I change the default hooks to Gamakatsu (2 x strong) or Owner (ST-41), VMC Treble Spark Point (X strong) and in extreme situations Tropic Spark Point (6xStrong). BTW Salmo Skinner 15 and 20 are the best way to catch a huge Muskie.

Thanks for the info. The skinner has gotten a lot of action in the boat between my dad and brother in law and is one of their go to lures. I just want to make sure when a fish the size of the one you are holding hits that I can finish the job putting it in the net. Thanks again.

Nice fish. Obviously I was totally off base. Hand landing a 51", that guy has balls.

It's you, there is line, there is a leader, there is a lure that is not broken in half..... thats not a common way to hold a fish and rod but thats how he did it so good for him. Jeez!

Why do these comments always come from some guy named "anonymous"? The lure is all there, take another look. I would imagine you can't see line because the picture isn't that high quality. I can't see line on most of my pictures, but that doesn't mean it's not there.

Yokozuna, congrats on a beautiful fish!

This is not my fish, unfortunately ... Musky was caught by Peter Piskorski
Dear "Anonymous" I can assure you that this is not a photomontage, Peter is a great angler and a man, suggesting deception here is simply not in place.

We are happy to read about your adventures from Skinner. Maybe you have some interesting photographs?

I don't have any photos of the skinner fish that they have caught in my possession, but I do know that my brother in law had around 6 or 7 hits on the skinner in one afternoon and boated 3 of them up to 43.5 inches. He told me the 1/0 hooks that come on it were mangled up after the 43.5, but he still landed it. He actually caught the same fish one year later, but I think the second time he caught it he got it on a dunwright life-like perch. I plan on getting some skinners and if I ever get a noteworthy fish on one I will let you know. Thanks again for the hook suggestions.

@Rainman JD, thank you for the information. Salmo Skinner is a really effective bait, I'm sure that soon you will show us the beautiful Muskie caught at it. Good luck!

I'm not questioning/doubting Peter Piskorski fish whatsover (as it's truly an exceptional fish) only the means of which he is holding the rod. Right hand? Nope. Left hand? Don't think so since he's holding the fish outward. Knee, armpit, or stomach? Nope. Does he have a belt clip or something?

Doesn't look all that tough, appears he is clamping the rod against his thigh with the arm holding the lower part of the musky.

I understand your concerns, but with a little practice you can hold both the rod and fish.

Sure. Casting scattered cabbage beds in about 11-12 FOW. I was ripping it down, and as I would take in the slack, the lure would start to float up. She just came up and completely hammered it. The fight didn't last too long. It should've lasted longer, as I bent the hooks while horsing her in. But she made it into the net, unhooked herself, and swam away nicely.

@Esoxmtk
Taimen was caught by Peter Piskorski in Mongolia.
