Just returned from a week's camping/fishing with a buddy who brought his new-to-him BassTracker boat. On the second day he somehow punched a 2-3" hole in the alum hull, though he said he can't recall hitting anything at all. Yikes, are they really that cheapo?

Ranger!
I have my daddy's 79 (B)assTracker, and it is a gem. I do hear that quality of Tracker Marine has gone steadily downhill. They are a cheap boat, thus the attraction. Go to their website and you can get prices and see how they are priced less than most other boats. Apparently, they have cut back the quality of the materials they install in order to gain this market share.
Now, any boat can get a hole in it, and please, I don't want to go to war over this with readers who have a Tracker and love it. In my browsing of other boards, however, I've seen complaint after complaint. I've been very fortunate with the one I have, but I would not buy a new boat from Tracker. m[]

I should know better than to generalize, you know, along the lines of "That one got a hole in the bottom so they are all bad boats." Sheesh, my boat is a 30 y/o 14' Blue Fin! Anyway, I'm glad you like your BassTracker and I hope others like theirs, too.

What the hell was the guy doing by putting himself in a possition where he COULD punch a hole in the bottom of the boat? I work in the mfg world and I find more often then not that careless/extream usage is the #1 cause of product failure. I'm very suspect of your friend and of you by throwing out blanket statements about a product the "failed" according to a "friend". I know people who have torn the transom off a Ranger 620. Does this make Rangers junk too.

Bottom line, this guy stuck a rock and is lucky that he only got a 2" hole out of the deal. If you think that it's because of cheap materials, go ask Teck what happened to his Lund. But then again Lund makes crap too, right [;)]

Chilly down, Treats, I was backing off a bit. No need for the harsh tone.

You are right to consider my friend and I suspects, however.

Rick,
While this is an unfortunate thing to happen to anyone,
it does offer the chance to learn how to properly repair
a hull puncture. Some where down the line , it might be
handy.

Sorry Ranger,

Yesterday I had a customer call claiming defective screws. Upon inspecting the problem, I discovered they were putting 15#'s of torq on a screw that's rated for 4#'s. I just get sick of people blaming product when 99% of the time it's their own damn fault [:knockout:]

Hey guys, it isn't only aluminum boats which run into difficulties.
A couple weeks back I knocked the h*!! out of the lower unit on my Merc sterndrive and destroyed a SS prop. $2300 for replacement lower unit and $150.00 to repair the prop. There I was 3/4 mile out in Lake Michigan just tooling along minding me own business enjoying the ride and......For Cripes Sake!!
Can't blame Wellcraft, can't blame Mercury, gotta blame the loose nut that was behind the wheel. That's why I have a depth sounder aboard but ya gotta pay attention to it, even if you way out where the water should be deep! Gawwwddd, I wish I only would have had a 2" hole to worry about.....[:0] [;)] [:p]

I sure hope your current on your insurance [8)] . That would suck not to have it. That's why I'm a Boat US member. I've had to be towed in each of the last 2 years. [:blackeye:]
