Had my thumb bar engage in mid cast and destroyed all but 1 drag washer. It also bent the anti reverse pawl and a pin. What a stinking mess. All parts in a ziplock bag waiting to be reassembled and sent in to be repaired. Just another $25 plus parts and shipping.
Anyone else have a similar problem?

I have done the same thing you described twice. Once I was winging a large pacemaker and another time I was thowing an 8" believer. I was lucky both times as Cabela's will take the Calcuttas back and replace the reel with a new one in store.

No power handle, just the standard paddle handle.

Does the power handle cause any ill effects that might have caused this issue. Just curious and learning everyday on this site.

Thanks
Mike

Yes Power Handles can/will cause reels to engage during the cast. I like the std handle from a 400 TE or a Luna 300. Also power handles put a lot of wear and tear on the pinion and main gears.

Send it to shimano, they have a decent turn around time. Dave's Reel service is another good choice for getting shimano reels fixed.

Thanks to all that replied, but already planned to send it to Shimano for repair/ replace. Was just curious if this had happened to anyone else.

Power handles (especially the one for the Calcutta 400B) will cause a reel to engage if they are not balanced properly. To tell if they balanced, take the handle off the reel and balance it on your finger like a "teeter totter." Add stainless washers to the other side to get it balanced.

Another way to avoid the reel engaging is to point the handle up when casting overhand.
