Subject: aftermarket lower units

Anybody out there ever gotten an after market lower unit. I'm in need of a new lower unit and due to an "accounting" error my boat insurance policy lapsed (long story, too many policies with the same company and one got forgotten, figures it would be the one I need) anyway I am looking at other alternatives to the $2100 for a merc reman. The guy at the dealership says they use cheep gears and aren't built well but I'm not sure if that's just cause he wants the sale or if it's legit. I was looking at a place called Texas Outboards and the sell after market lower units for around $800 plus shipping with the water pump (another $50 if I went with the reman). Anyway they come with three year warranties, Any opinions!?!?

Hiya,

I think before I would make a purchase through them, I'd be placing a call to them to find out where they are getting their parts from. Anything that might come from across seas like China might raise an eyebrow... I think I would be asking whether or not the parts are guaranteed they would meet OEM specs as well..
At the prices listed, I'd be a bit skeptical on it, but there is something to say about OEM products and higher prices as well... this would be a hard dilema for me...

I might be asking myself as well...how long do I plan on keeping the boat? If it is less than 3 years, I would say it may not be a bad choice, but then again, I'd hate to see a lower unit freeze up on the buyer not long after purchasing from you (unless you trade in)
