Posts: 541 | other than like big mantrap does anybody spend much time on the other muskie waters over there and do you catch anything ever! Big Sand,Ida Belle Taine and some other smaller ones over there, seems like the numbers are pretty low, hardly even self sustaining maybe anymore! I see one guy on the big fish page is got one from Potato, I dint even know they were in there!

| If you look in the Llunge Log you'll notice he registered the fish as from another lake. Not sure why you'd try to hide that you caught it in Bemidji. It is a pretty commonly fished lake! Good luck finding one in Potato! | |||

Posts: 366 | My grandparents live on Belle Taine about two blocks from Nevis, and in all the years I've fished it, I've only seen a couple muskies. I've heard stories from neighbors and seen a couple photos, but they are very rare to come out of there. I head to Mantrap, Leech, the Planet and many others north of there to fish muskies. They aren't that far from there and are much better choices for time spent on the water chasing muskies. Ryan

| I've been fishing muskies in the park rapids area for 8 years and have only seen or caught muskies on mantrap. The fisheries office has not caught muskies on the rest of the chain. I grew up on emma and spent lots of time on upper and lower bottle, emma, big sand, ida, and little sand. The drive to belle taine by boat was too long. I've seen some pictures of claimed muskies that turned out to be silver phase pike. | |||

Posts: 541 | Thanks guys for the input on these lakes, it is what I figured too! with these lakes established as muskie lakes already it would be nice too get some stocking of additional fish in them. I know it's hard to get that done with having to have input meetings and all but maybe since they are in there already it would be easier to do, or maybe the dnr would just do it anyway!

| I already spoke with Doug Kingsley about stocking the rest of the chain. He said that there wasn't enough public interest to make it feasible. He also said that if it were to be stocked the existing fish would need to be sampled to determine if they were significantly genetically different than leech lake fish. If they were they would stock the native strain to maintain evolutionary advantages for the waters. I don't think it will happen since we have so many musky waters near bemidji and walker along with mantrap, elk, and plantagenette for close waters. | |||

That's sad! what will happen is the fish will cease to exist in these lakes due to numbers not being self sustaining eventually! wich probably really won't be that long from now! and if they are genetically different then leech lake fish them gentetics will be gone forever too! they say these waters are managed for muskullunge but in reality there is no management other than a 48" minimum and right before that it was only 40".

| I've been vactioning on Belle Taine two weeks a year for 15 yrs - never seen a muskie, although about 12 yrs ago saw a very large fish "porpoising" - might have been a ski. A few years back the DNR had gills nets out for survey are there was a rumor in Nevis that they got a big ski in the net, but when the report came out on the DNR website there was no ski mentioned. I used the throw musky baits while up there but gave up about 5 yrs ago. From what I understand it was a very good musky lake in the 40"s and 50's but the fish are long gone due to overharvesting. When I first starting going up there I was told Big/Little Sand had a small/fishable population - but that was 15 yrs ago. Mantrap has Leech Lake strain so I see no reason why the DRN couldn't use Leach strain in the rest of the chain too. My understanding is that there's a strong dark-house association on this chain so Muskies Inc and other musky groups gave up trying to get the chain re-stocked - they needed to conceed some lake for spearing to keep other lake protected. | |||

Posts: 541 | yah I don't think I am going to bother throwing out there either! I have been doing some researching on muskie lakes and the dnr has all these lakes listed on there as muskie lakes but when it comes down to it there really is only a handfull of lakes worth fishing compared to what is claimed out there. It is a sad thing. It's great we got new lakes and maybe more coming but we have just as many dying or dead! We have to ask the question are we really gaining that much headway in the muskie world, maybe not as much as we think!
