Posts: 51 | I am looking for some help with trolling spinnerbaits. There is some water I am hoping to run some spinnerbaits through deeply. I really don't want to go the downrigger route. Does anyone have expierence running heavy spinnerbaits behind the boat? I am looking at something like a Pearson Grinder (I've had good luck with these in other settings) in the 5 oz. model. I'm wondering what kind of depth a heavy spinnerbait would run trolled 50 - 70 feet back behind the boat? Thanks in advance. Edited by NY Muskie 9/14/2010 11:36 AM

Location: Des Moines IA | If you run long trolling leaders, all you have to do to adjust depth, is clip on a lead weight at the front of the leader. The heavier the weight, the deeper it will run. It also acts as a weed catcher.

Posts: 291 Location: Minneapolis | Without added weights, you won't get much depth at all, even if you go slow (say 2 mph). I don't think you'll get down more than a couple feet. I've trolled heavy, single blade Rad Dogs at 4 mph, and the blade is gurgling on the surface. That's what I wanted, so I was happy, but if you want to go deep, you need more weight.

Posts: 184 | for trolling spinnerbaits at places like chautauqua i personally start w/ 4oz balls and have 6oz and 8oz in the boat all the time also. those 4oz weights work great in front of wiley's and lots of other shallow cranks and have caught fish at that lake that way also. it lets you run shorter line (40ft) and still get down. plus you can work structure better w/ shorter lines out. so i would say start w/ a 4oz weight and 50-60 feet of line out w/ get you only 6-8 feet down at 5 mph with a heavy spinnerbait. blade size matters and so does boat speed.

Zach, how heavy are the baits you are running ? I ask because I'm wondering if a 5 oz spinnerbait will accomplish the same thing as a 4 oz ball.

Location: Des Moines IA | I have found the weight of the spinnerbait really has less effect than you would think due to the lift created by the blade, or blades. The only way I have found to get them down to the desired depth is weighting the leader in front of the bait.

Posts: 51 | Mike, Are you using the keel type sinkers?

Location: Des Moines IA | I've used bell sinkers, lindy no snag sinkers, pyramid, ball sinkers, they all work. I haven't used keel sinkers specifically but I am sure they would work.

Posts: 480 | Willeys in west Virginia makes a perfect deep trolling spinnerbait, it's called a T10 (10 ounces). no extra weight needed. 3.5 mph reaches 15 ft with 35 feet of line out.

Posts: 720 | MuskieMike, I've been trying out my down riggers and shorter lines. Say 30 to 40 out and about 10' down. While I've caught a few fish I'm not tearing them up. Any suggestions?

Location: Des Moines IA | I've never ran spinnerbaits on downriggers? I run spinnerbaits on the inside 2 rods on my spreads, closest to shore, then run cranks on the outside 2 rods. I saddle the break and get good depth coverage that way. Boards might be a better choice, get them away from the boat. Although I do know of guys running spinnerbaits shallow, at speeds up to 7 mph and catching fish on real short lines, so It's hard to say, especially as each lake is it's own entity.

Posts: 184 | those willeys are a huge spinnerbait. i personally have used those in-line weights but prefer those round lead balls (jo jo sinkers) in front. those in-line weights make me to nervous (dont look strong enough for me). i dont want to count on those not to break. i just take a snap and hook that weight to the swivel on my trolling leader. if i am going to run with weight, i use a longer 5-6 foot leader. some people on LSC go to almost 8-9 feet of leader. good luck. Posts: 623 Location: Bloomington, MN | Ruff Dog makes a 3.5 oz. spinnerbait with a # 10 blade. Remove the #10, and replace with a #7 colorado. It is now fall, so you won't need to be zippin'!

I make my own large spinner baits that weigh just over 1/2 a pound and will get down to 15 feet and deeper at slower speeds with out any trouble. Double # 8 blades. No weights needed and they run like bullets at high speed down 3 to 4 feet.
