Posts: 1459 Location: Kronenwetter, WI | Was out fishing with a friend tonight and he hit a rock, bent up his prop, lost his skeg, and the shaft is visibly bent. The aluminum prop is repairable and a new skeg i know can be welded on, but not sure what the prognosis is on cost to repair/replace a bent shaft. Can anyone shed some light on what he can expect to pay to address the bent shaft? Can a guy find them used? Thanks in advance, Rick

Depending on the condition of the motor and it's age, it may be more cost effective to get the money for the motor (if insurance is covering it) and put that toward a different motor. Hopefully a full replacement of the lower unit will be all it takes and hopefully not too many $$ out of pocket. Not sure on cost, although when I had a lower unit replaced on a 50hp johnson, it was around $1500, and that was back in 2002. You might be able to find a used lower unit on ebay, or a parts motor to take the lower unit from, although that is definitely a buyer beware issue. Steve

Posts: 2323 Location: Stevens Point, WI | My lower unit found a rock last summer on a lake that was way down and that cost me $1500 for a new lower unit and a reworked stainless steel prop on my 175 Pro XS. It'll definitley be $1000+ I'm guessing. Edited by TJ DeVoe 9/3/2010 9:12 PM
