I'm never the lucky one.... I have to work my butt off for everything I have, and when the sun shines, its usually on my dog's rear...

Well, I'll spare you all the details, but here is the jist...

My dad and I rarely have time to get together and enjoy Creation, let alone muskie fish. I asked dad to attend the 2010 SBR/M1st outing on Vermilion on a whim knowing that he rarely has time for trips, not to mention he has never spent this amount of time muskie fishing. I kinda thought it was a long shot that he would be able to go, but to my surprise, he took me up on the offer!

To say the fish were remotely cooperative is an extreme understatement.... We saw 4 good fish the first day, two the second, and not so much as a follow the past 3 days. I was pretty upset knowing that many of our previous outdoor endeavors never ended in success. BUT, I have been at this muskie game long enough to know this is how it sometimes goes.

Today I stuck a brand-new mag dawg in the rocks on one of the reefs. (Second cast with this bait as I won it during one of the dock-sides Steve was putting on) A 25 MPH wind made it nearly impossible and I had to cut the line..... That was it and I said screw it! Dad was tired from battling the wind all week, and chucking the lumber around, so he was ready to call it as well..... We pulled the boat out and loaded up for our 6 AM departure the following morning....

(this is getting long I know... Please bear with me for just a bit longer... :D)

TJ asked if I wanted to go out after dark for a few hours and I reluctantly agreed... Dad was tired and ready for bed, and I was planning on driving back to Iowa in the early AM, so I knew I was going to be tired, but what the heck. Quitters never catch muskies, so I agreed... One last hurrah!

Just before 11 PM this piggy ate my bait with 12 inches of line out between my rod tip and my leader..... Intense....

The rest is history!

I can't thank Steve Worrall enough for the invite and support through this site and the radio show.

I can't thank Steve Amundson for the tremendous accommodations, which are honestly second to none... My dad and I were both blown away! Spring Bay Resort needs to be on the top of your list!!! Fish or no fish....

I can't thank the population of this site enough as I have learned so much through your conversations and have immensely enjoyed the new relationships I have formed because of MuskiesFIRST.

I can't thank TJ enough for the invite and sharing his rig..... and loaning me the bait, which is now mine as apart of the custom with sticking your personal best. :D AND for being totally prepared and diligent at taking lots of pix as I pulled her out. An experienced partner like him made all the difference when getting good photos which never overshadowed our interest in getting the fish back in the water in less than a minute....

And I can't thank dad enough for sticking with this trip, even when times got tough. The only thing that would have made netting my new personal best muskie any better would have been to have dad with me in the boat.... but, I'll take it anyway I can get it!

Gold CowGirl
53 3/4"
22" girth and she swam away like a champ!

I'll give the details on the encounter during next week's OFM Radio..... Look for it!!

Tom,
I've never met you and someday I hope too. So I can shake the hand of what I believe you represent. That would be a first class musky fisherman. Not just because of the fish. Although, it certainly doesn't hurt and congratulations on beautiful musky. But this thread and post is a great example of what I constantly talk to my kids about. Fishing particularly musky fishing is about the adventure of the trip. The travel, lodging, weather conditions and most importantly the people you're with. All of this adds up to an expierence. Put enough of these snipets together and a person gets great memories. Thats what I get when I read your post. A small glimpse into a guy name Tom's life. The appreciation and humility in your post is absolutely refreshing and tomorrow morning when my son wakes up I'm going to ask him to read this. Then I'm going ask how he feels about what you wrote. I think I already know how he will answer.

A great fish for a great fisherman
Way to go!!

Sweet! Nice story and truely a solid memory to replay this winter as you contemplate the 2011 season....... Hee, hee, 12" of line out & 53.75' x 22" muskie w/boat side strike in the dark - I'd probably have shatt my pants! Very nice.... Ooooooops! TJ, got any TP?

Very nice job TJ, i.e., putting someone on their PB, very nice!

Did it qualify for the MF Outing Lax Repo?

Congrats!

Tom,

Good for you! Great job on a trophy class fish.

Enjoy the moment---that fish is the reason why we all love to fish Musky's.
I bet the ride home will be really sweet!

What's the old saying, "Everyone has there 15 minutes of fame"
Towards the end of a bad trip my friends and I always say to each other, "IT only takes one cast to make the trip"

Way to stick with it to the bitter end.

Thomas,
It was an absolute pleasure meeting you and your Dad, the apple didn't fall too far from that tree!

Congrats on a true trophy!

OutdoorsFIRST is fortunate to have you working with us, and that's a fact. Looking forward to many more outings, both fishing and hunting!

Actually my last question in the post above was "stupid" - the MF awards are usually based on the actual final MF outing get together/awards brew haa, haa! Which is also usually a great get together. Lot's of big fish tales and sometimes but not always tall tales. As it well should be there has to be a cut-off! My apology! Still a sweet achievement -> catching a 53.75" PB.

Have fun!
Al

Tom, I know exactly how you feel. Vermilion has been brutal on my confidence over the years. But in the spirit of perserverence and the sheer enjoyment of the sport I have remained faithful too. Vermilion has paid off for me and allowed me to make some of the most amazing memories I will ever recall.
What a great story and a truely amazing fish! (Love the vertical shot)
Congratulations from Indiana!

I've fished for a long time but I am a novice when it comes to muskies. I fished with TJ for most of the week. He was great, always positioning the boat so I would be able to cast to productive water and teaching me a great deal about muskies. I didn't catch a muskie but I did have one monster follow my bucktail to the boat. She just wasn't hungry enough to take the offering.

Steve W. put together an awesome outing and his dockside demos were great teaching sessions.

Steve A. from Spring Bay and his family were great hosts and run a first class operation. Spring Bay is the best fishing resort / fishing camp I have ever been to.

The only downside when fishing Vermilion is the ultra restrictive slot limit on walleye. As I fish walleyes most of the time, I would not fish Vermilion other than on a muskie outing.
