Location: Maple Grove MN | I fish out of a Ranger R83 which is a little longer than the boats that you are looking at. IMO these boats are great for shallow water, calm conditions, anytime I'm on a lake larger than 2000+ acres I try to stay out of the wind. The trolling motor shaft comes out of the water in waves bigger than 2.5-3' and it's hard to stay on course. |

Location: Southern Ontario, Detroit River and Lake StClair | A guy I used to work with had an R61 with a 90hp Merc on it. He fished with it for one season. He got it manily to Walleye and Bass fish on the Detroit River and near shore on Lake StClair. He did alright with it early in the year but part way through the season got into Muskie fishing and soon realized that the best fishing isnt always on the nicest of days. After taking a wave over the bow and swamping the boat (good thing for level floatation) the installed dual high capacity bilge pumps and a portable cockpit pump. Later that year he had the same thing happen. This time lost two boxes of baits off front deck but at least got the boat pumped out ok. He traded it in that fall and got an older 17ft fisherman with a 115 and has never looked back. Twice the Muskie boat as a R61. On a small lake or river the R61 might be ok but if your going to be on any water where theres a chance of you getting caught in some nasty stuff I'd say your better off with something a bit more seaworthy
Good Fishin'

Location: Davenport, IA | I have a Javelin Venom 17. It is 16'8" and has a 115. Its very easy to fish from with large decks. The boat is actually pretty good in rough water. Now If I was fishing Mille Lacs regularly I would not choose such a boat. But a lot of us fish lakes under 10,000 acres. Only thing that I do not like about it is not having a kicker because I fish a lot of horsepower restricted lakes and would like to troll on them. |
