Posts: 400 Location: North/Central WI | Need to buy a new unit this week. Looking at Humminbird 898 or 998. How much difference does the 1" bigger screen make? Is it worth $500 more? Does side imaging work ok on a trolling motor mount? (If I bought the 898, it would go on the bow of my new boat next spring and I would buy a 998 for the stern) Both of my Lowrance 520c's went down this month due to moisture issues, so this is an unexpected expense. Any input is appreciated.

Posts: 720 | Hi Nate, I would go with the 998 if you could swing it. I know its 1 inch but in having this very disscussion with my wife last week. She said that 1inch made a big difference. ( insert joke here). I spent the better part of an hour looking at both last week and I do agree. Checkout this site:http://forums.sideimagingsoft.com/index.php

Posts: 166 Location: Gurnee, Illinois | Hey Nate, I have the equivalent set up with a 917 on the bow and a 997 at the console, and the 1" difference doesn't bother me. I did research the SI quite a bit before buying, and there are guys that have it on the trolling motor, the problem is once you turn the motor you are gonna get a smeared image. SI works the best while going straight, between 4-6 mph. Even on the transom when you turn you loose image quality. Now the down imaging may be a different story on the trolling motor, but I don't have any info on that. Some good sites for HB info are: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sideimaging/ http://www.xumba.scholleco.com/ Dave ![]()

I just put an 898 on my boat. I think the screen size is fine, but its on my dash. The side imagin is better than I expected. I played around with it on LOTW specifically looking for reefs. When I had difficulty using the GPS/map I would flip it to side imaging to locate. Really impressed. As stated, I would not recommend putting it on a trolling motor.

Posts: 233 Location: Iowa | i have a question for you guys that have moisture/water problems with your graphs. Wheres your locator at when it draws moisture? If you have it on your boat all the time, is always out in the elements, is covered up or do you ever take it off? Did you just go fishing out in the rain and draw moisture then? Just curious? Posts: 400 Location: North/Central WI | The moisture got into my 520c's while fishing during heavy rain falls. Units have always been removed during storage and travel.

Posts: 99 | I run a SI unit on the bow with the Tducer on the trolling motor, it is nice for following weedlines and structure, size personall preference

Posts: 238 Location: Rhinelander | Side imaging is a great tool.....almost seems should be illegal. ![]() I went with the 998 on the dash, worth it for me vs the 898 but a personal decission. Also run an older Lowrance color locator on the dash and still glad I went with the 998. Bow I run a 788.......don't know if the side imaging would be worth it on the trolling motor with the constant movement. I find myself when fishing alone in the front to swing the 998 around to view (ram mount) it is that nice. Very, very happy with the switch from Lowrance to Humminbird... ran Lowrance on my last (2) boats.

Posts: 378 Location: Michigan | I put two 998's on my Ranger this spring. I am very pleased with the setup. I personally like the SI on the TM. Works great, you just have to be aware that the image will be "off" when turning. Down image is awesome on TM. I got my units from Overton's with a 20% off coupon. Couldn't beat the price. This is the first time i have owned Humminbird, and I have no regrets on the switch from Lowrance.
