Might want to google that model. $600 is kinda high if you look around. And i can't say for sure but i'm guessing the preloaded maps are not as good as a dedicated chip from Lakemaster for whatever state you fish in. You'd be adding another $100 for that. I've never used that unit but thats something you should check into.

The 5m Gold actually comes with a special issue Navionics Gold chart card. I looked these units over at ICAST and they are nice, very easy to use from what I could tell.

I'd suggest looking at the HDS-5. You can get one with basemap, no maps preloaded for $699.99. If you buy the HDS, then you also have the sonar if you ever needed or wanted it. Then add a Navionics chip and you'd be set.

If your going to use the depth sounder much you won't be happy running split screen with a 5 inch screen. Go for the 7 if possible.

This is true, I had a 7 inch on my old boat (just black and white though) and now have a color 5 inch.
The color is much nicer, but I really miss the larger screen.

One thing I have done though is I keep it on map and just add digital data to the map. I add speed, depth, time, whatever I want on there.
The only time I actually use a split screen is if im looking for a piece of structure and seeing if there is bait or fish holding on it. Otherwise it is in full map view with the depth displayed in that view.

Just an option. The 7 inch model is considerably more expensive so I am just making do with this for now.

HDS 5 units with just the basemap can be found online for $600, not $700. Its not hard to find a few good prices from reputable retailers. Definitely go the HDS route.
