Posts: 388 | Long story short... When attempting to unhook an unruly 24" pike this AM I lost my 8'6" XHF Lamiglass, Abu Record, and Pacemaker over the side of the boat. Had the rod sitting across both gunnels but the fish took a quick dive down and pulled the whole shooting match with it. Due to heavy wind, I was unable to position my boat above it for salvage operation before it sunk beneath visibility. Did manage to scrounge up a pair of my kids swimming goggles that was left in my boat from camping earlier this week and went diving for a bit. Also initiated a dredging operation with a fuzzy duzzit for abot 45 min but alas was unable to bring her back to the surface where she belongs. May this rod rest in peace... I was a big fan of this rod because fish stuck to it like glue. Despite the XHF rating it had a good flex. Got away with some stuff that would otherwise have left me fishless. So getting to my question - have these rods changed at all in the past 4 years? I can't get my hands on one locally to check them out. Also see that they now offer a 9' model but it is not XHF rated. If anybody has a used 86XHF that they want to sell, shoot me a PM. PS - I now know that Lamiglass rods sink. Had accidentally launched a St. Croix in the drink a few years ago and it floated and I assumed that the rest would too. Not all musky rods float!

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | Oh man that's a sad story! If you have a pretty good idea where the rod fell over I think I would rig up a rod catcher and see if you can get it. Maybe get a 3 or 4 foot long piece of threaded rod or something and attach treble hooks to it with some big bell sinkers. If it were me I would be dredging the bottom for that outfit! I made a similar bottom dragger when I lost a custom color Curley Sue (old line and backlash...oops). I just twisted some trebles and bell sinkers onto 18" or so of leader wire and attached my snap to a loop in the middle. At that time I had more time than I had money, so I went back to where I marked the splashdown spots. It actually didn't take that long to snag the bait and get it back. Unless that northern took off with your rod and drug it a ways, I would think you might still be able to get it back if you were over a relatively clean bottom. curleytail

Posts: 224 Location: Madison | That IS a sad story - I love my Lamiglas rods as well. I bought a new 8'6" last year or the year before, it seems to perform just like the older 8'6" XHF. Maybe try a really strong magnet like: http://www.kjmagnetics.com/products.asp?cat=16 The rare earth magnets are crazy strong, put a ring on a fishing rig and drag it along bottom for a bit and if it hits the reel or lure you're getting it back. And if you get any extra PMs re: Lamiglas 8'6" rods, send em my way!

Posts: 774 Location: South East Wisconsin | Aw man sad to hear. I lost two of my favorite Pacemakers too fish. One, a big fish rolled up the line and cut me off lost both. Other happened this year hooked another good fish and she ended up breaking the tail piece off lost both. I know the feeling I went back many times hoping to find these lures. Good luck on finding a new rod.

Posts: 909 Location: South-Central VA | I would not advise using the 9' for casting, I'm pretty sure it's a trolling rod. I talked with some Lami reps at the ICRBE in High Point back in Feb and I'm positive that's what they told me. I could be wrong, my memory fails me from time to time. But, that would explain the 30lb line rating.

Posts: 295 | the new lamiglas rods are very similar. imo they have even softened up a little this year if anything but even nicer. these rods have the heaviest ratings (rated to 8 oz and way more flex than similar length rods with 3 or 4oz tips) of any rods ive seen to date. i like to say lamiglas has real ratings! get another one!

The Lamiglas 8'6 is exactly the same. Great rod! It is the rod I use for 90% of what I throw. The 9 ft is great for casting! I would know, I helped design and test this rod. It was initially intended to be a trolling/livebait rod. However is an awesome rod for chucking the BIG stuff. This is what I use to toss pounder+ size stuff, ripping 14" Jakes, big blades, stuff like that. Great multipurpose rod. Very similar in action to the 8'6, however the 9' is a graphite/glass hybrid. It is heavier in weight due to the fiberglass. It was made to handle the fish, and fishing we do on Green Bay in late November.

Posts: 1023 | I lost a spinning rod in about 6 ft of water. I returned the next day with a high jump(I am a teacher) pole and coat hanger hook lashed to the end. Got the rod in minutes. If it is not very deep this may work for you.

Posts: 133 | That's a great picture, I think I know where that is at! I have been looking at it all weekend. Sorry to hear about the rod combo. Do what Curlytail said, rig up something and dredge the bottom. I have done it before for an anchor that let loose. Got it back too!

Posts: 272 | Unless they made the older ones differently than the new ones.......Lami rods float. Or at least my new 8.5' XHF does. That and a floating bait.....boy, I'd sure think that thing is on the surface somewhere. Unless that fish borrowed the whole works down in the weeds and got the rod tangled too. That sucks man. My Lami quickly became my most favorite rod.

Posts: 388 | Surprised me too. Possibly the construction has changed or the Record 60 was enought to take her down. I was on the edge of a weed flat when I lost it but thought that something would stick up. Spent quite a bit of time trying to retrieve at various points during the day. Will have to return with a long stick and a coat hanger next time I fish that lake to do some more dredging. My Fuzzy Duzzit found nothing but weeds. The goggles that I used were not very good either. Once under water they refracted in a way that made me feel walleyed. Guess that is to be expected for something we bought for the kids at a concession stand next to the beach on Lake Michigamme (PS not the lake where I lost the rod).

Posts: 230 | That does suck, I lost one of my favorite rod and reel combinations last year while muskie fishing. Quantum Tour Edition PT baitcasting reel and an old walleye jigging rod, a favorite of mine. #*^@ed Pt weighs eleven ounces and dragged that rod to the bottom. Funny thing is, it fell into 5 feet of water, where I could see bottom, but never was able to see the rod.....really bizarre. Good luck finding the rod, tell your wife you just lost one of your fishing rods so now you have an excuse to spend $600 on an outfit hahaha
