| While attending a family reunion in Leland Michigan a few years back, I saw a big one sun bathing in shallow water right in the Leland boat harbor. This fish was a mid-40's range in length and looked like it had just eaten a watermelon. Largest girth on a fish that length I have ever seen. A couple of young anglers were casting to it with Mepps spinners and other lures, but she'd have nothing to do with them. Maybe because she was a few yards away from 10 million alewives/smelt (I dunno what they were) that were running up the little spillway/dam there.
It was exciting to see her and think about the possibilities of what might be lurking in other parts of that huge body of water.

Location: Syracuse, Indiana | I have seen a photo of a muskie caught near Burn's Harbor (Indiana) a few years ago. Speculation was that it roamed down stream from Skinner Lake - a long trip! I'd rather hoped it was the start of a new (and huge) fishery. |
