Posts: 406 Location: Stones throw away...finally!! | Could someone help me out with a couple questions? I am in the process of putting grease and oil on my reels for my Canada trip and want to make sure that I am adding grease and oil to the correct areas. I think I should put grease on the internal gears and oil on the worm gear. Is this correct? Also, I have an LJV Calcutta and don't really feel comfortable taking it apart. Is there any way to get to the internal gears by not taking it apart, like on my Toro's? I notice that there are two holes on the underside of the frame, and am wondering if these are used for getting grease in without dis-assembly or maybe just for water drainage. I have attached a picture showing the holes. Thanks for the help. Attachments ---------------- ![]()

Posts: 1887 Location: syracuse indiana | i do believe those holes are for drainage. some used to use it in the past and some have gone back to doing that. salt water reels this big ones had those. you didnt want salt water sitting in there, and that also gave you a way to sorta flush the reels out....bill

Posts: 1270 | Just remember that in fresh water more problems occur with to much lubrication as opposed to to little, a little goes a long way!

Posts: 723 | print out a schematic, take your time, do it in a very clean area over some white towels. take pictures for reference when you take it apart for your first time. dont dump lube thru those lil holes in the bottom, wont get you anywhere other than that crap seepin out onto your hands while casting. bad news there. Posts: 196 | I found a really nice lubrication instruction on the abu garcia website. I know that yours is not an abu, but this lubrication guide was just for basic lubrication of a round style baitcaster.......but to answer your question abu, diawa, shimano, and okuma all recommend the grease for gears and oil on both your worm gear, and the point where your spool goes into the sideplates...just one drop in there though! I alsi never put more than a couple of drops on the worm gear and usually turn the reel upside down, drop a couple drops in the worm and then reel the reel still upside down so that the oil works it's way through the worm, otherwise when you turn it back rightside up and reel, most of the oil will just drip out and not move through your worm. Hope this helps. I also agree with the guy that said don't use the holes. I could see two problems there, one like he said not going to get alot of lube on the gears, and grease on hands. The other would be that if they are drainage holes, the grease could plug up the holes and cause water to not be able to drain, therefore laying in the reel.
