Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> Creel Survey Results

Twice this year when coming off of lakes I have been stopped by someone working for the DNR doing creel surveys. Does anyone know if this information is made public anywhere? Would be neat to see what a particular lake put out over a one or two month span.

Definately.

I also think that it would be interesting to close a lake for 5 years or so then reopen it, and then see what's swimming around in there!

They survey one of my favorite lakes in Vilas Co every 5 years. I phoned the office in Woodruff after the season & received complete data for the electrofishing & net samples, as well as the creel survey, for all species.

As cincinnatti said, all you have to do is contact the fisheries biologist for the region in which the lake is located. They will snail mail you any info that you want. You must be sure that you contact the EXACT PERSON in the DNR that has access to that info, otherwise you will play a little game of going back and forth between various people. A general email to the DNR office will not suffice. A phone call or in person meeting is even better. That type of info will likely eventually be on the WDNR website, but it isn't there yet. I get the lake creel survey, shocking and netting data, and stocking data of most of the lakes I fish regularily.

I also use the Citizen Lake Monitoring page on the DNR website to check on water clarity, dissolved oxygen, and phosphorus and clorophyll levels in the lakes I will be fishing. Be forwarned that most of this information from both of those sources will just be in raw data form and you will have to ask the biologist to decipher the abbreviations and explain what the data means. I took a few fisheries courses in college just for that purpose...lol

Some lakes will have the full reports already written and you will get that. There they will explain what the data all means, but again these reports are not written for the general public to be able to comprehend. They are prepared for the fisheries biologists bosses and higher ups in the DNR who will decide based upon that report which part(s) of the recommendations made by the biologist will be implemented in the future on that lake.

Hope this info helps you in your search!
