Subject: trolling believers

I was trying to pull believers along a 11-12 ft weed edge and wanted to keep them up so was using the shallow setting but had trouble with them rolling over and blowing out around 4mph....

when trolling believers do u guys use the shallow or deep setting?
what speed has worked best?
how much line?

Any other ideas for baits than can be trolled through some ocasional cabbage and not foul every time?

I always troll them on the deep setting, in shallow water I never run them farther then 30 feet out and usually with 30lb mono. Dont be afraid to run them 5-10 feet back in the wash:)

I like to troll the 10" jointed believers. I run anywhere from 2.5 mph to 5 mph. some run better than others. I believe that if it is rolling out to the right you can tweek the eye(where you hook the leader) to the right. If you do that and it is worse tweak it to the left.
I like my Believers to dig;dig, dig, dig then kick out to the right or left then dig, dig, dig, dig, kick out-ect. You can tell by watching the rod tip or if you hold the rod you will feel it. The kick out is the trigger for strikes.
I make lots of small turns and run with 35- 50 ft of line out over submerged structure and do figure 8's with my trolling passes out over the deep water. Gander Mountain had them on the clearance rack several years ago for like $8.00.

Keep your hooks sharp, loosen the drad so if you get hung up line will slip off and don't rush them to the boat.

Good Luck

Good info...

I saw a few of these on eBay and might make a bid. Look like decent lures!

I've trolled the 10" on the shallow eye before at that speed and they didn't blow out on me. So I think there is some tuning to be done. The straight model on the deep eye will hit around 10' with 25-30' of line out. This can help if you are trying to run tight to structure as long as you are boat control is up to snuff. Give them a try again and see if you can't get them to stop blowing out.

The ability to troll on the shallow eye varies greatly from lure to lure. Some do it beautifully and you just can't get others to stay down. Try attaching a half to one ounce bell sinker to the front hook split ring. That usually works.

You could also attach 8-16oz weight 3ft ahead of the bait and no matter how much it hunts you should be able to keep it down.

If your Believers are blowing out on the shallow (bottom) eye at 4mph you have tuning issues or a bad bait. I've seen some newer ones that just dont run right but the majority of the ones I have from 7"-13" will all take as much speed as I can through at them and not pull the rod out of the holder or snap it off.

How could I not be sure??? I stuck three believer asses in musky mouths. Thought the first 2 were because they were beat up from alot of fish but then it happened to a new one, and that was it Im done with them. I have 2 buddys that are charter captians on St. Clair that won't run them any more either. One guy sent 20 back to drifter Tackle.
Good luck
