just seen a post recently where someone said eventually the mono will swell up and can damage the reel! anybody had these issues thinking about using some mono backing on my reels but concerned now!

This is news to me. I doubt mono swells up enough to crack a spool.

It can happen when using extremely high drag when the fish actually takes out line. In musky fishing we use a high drag but let's be honest muskys don't really take drag out. And when they do it certainly doesn't take out drag to the mono backing. This is not a concern at all for a musky reel but I've seen spools pop when using all mono on strong fighting fish such as tuna.

That is why its news to me. I don't know any tuna anglers. Do tuna hit on a figure-8 as well???
