Posts: 364 Location: Kentucky | Heading to south Eagle Lake Ontario next week and we're hoping for a little help on best nav chip to use for my brother's Lowrance HDS-8. Thanks for the help! Edited by sputterbug 7/3/2010 7:52 PM

Posts: 1767 Location: Lake Country, Wisconsin | I'm not sure but I do know that unlike Lake of the Woods there is no reliable GPS chip on the market to mark out hazards, especially on the Eastern and Southern portions of the lake

Posts: 157 | Fished Eagle Lake last Summer and the chip did very little in the way of providing assitance to navigation. My best suggestion is to use the chip to lay down a known path of deeper water and do not, REPEAT DO NOT, get going faster than your motor can raise up. Busted up a lower unit pretty badly on what we thought was a safe route which we had laid earlier in the day. Must have been off my no more than 15 feet, but it was enough to lose a morning of fishing trying to patch up a lower unit. We had the Navionics chip and for the most part it didn't do much good. You fishing out of a resort?

There are some real motor eaters out there that will get you in trouble. My suggestion would be to get advise from the lodge owner on areas of the lake (some areas are a lot worse than others). Then in the end, go slow till you lay a course. Some lodges like Andy Myers lodge do a GREAT job of putting jugs on all the hazards in their area...unfortunately, most others don't.

Posts: 897 | Guess I just haven't found them yet, eh Cory? I've been the navigator for the past three years and we've never had a close call just going off the paper map, nor have we found anything that isn't on the paper map Herbie sells...I think it's the HotSpots map. That includes going into the west arm, south, and east, as well as just around in Vermilion Bay. Not saying they're not out there, but I haven't found any yet...

Posts: 364 Location: Kentucky | Sorry to hear about your trouble. That's not fun. I can relate, had a similar incident on LOTW. We're staying at Century Lodge in the south end. stcroixmusky - 7/6/2010 12:04 PM Fished Eagle Lake last Summer and the chip did very little in the way of providing assitance to navigation. Posts: 462 Location: Syracuse, Indiana | The Navionics chip is pretty good until you get to the Coleman/Stanton area. No idea east of there. Memory is that Steve Heiting indicated something similar on the MH board. That said, pretty good is not perfect. I have marked several reefs that don't show on the FHS map. I can relate to the "pucker factor". In my pre-gps days, I was running across a bay on Eagle, no hazards on the map, bottom went from 60' to 2', then back down to 60' before I could react. Herbie's guides have shown me rocks that I never knew existed, and I've been on Eagle a week or two most of the last 15 or so years. My suggestion: stay at AML, hire a guide date (or 3), and take good notes. One day fishing with Herbie or one of his guides will teach you more about the lake than you can learn in a week by yourself.

I just came back from Century Lodge, they are very good at marking a map for you and they discuss the hazards immediately when you get there. I have the GPS Canada chip, the Navionics and it does ok, but there are hazards on the map that don't exist and hazards that are there and not even close to where they really are. It was great fishing. Those people are great. Great food. Fishing was outstanding!
