To those of you that have actually taken the top cap off the head of a Terova trolling motor - Can you tell me if the compass unit that sits in there is supposed to be fixed/mounted/screwed to something?

Mine just sits in there loose, and I can hear it rattle around in there when i stow it and bounces around in there when driving as well. To me that does NOT seem like the way it should be installed.

It just sits in there from what I remember. I helped install a few iPilots earlier this year at a marina I was working for and every time we took the top piece off, everything was just sitting in there. So, unless I had some that weren't being held down, I'd say that's normal.

That's the same way mine was when replaced my autopilot with an ipilot. It was just sitting in there. I think it sat between four plastic prongs that's supposed to keep it in place.

I would take the top and take a look. It won't hurt anything.

Yeah, it just sits in there. I actually wedged it into some wires to help secure it down when I took the head unit off to check on why my universal sonar wasnt working. Not a nice feeling to open it up and have that just banging around loose. Going over some rough water I heard it dislodge and start rattling around in there.

On a side note, when my universal sonar wasnt working properly, I opened up the face and found that the connection between the transducer and outlet to the sonar had become disconnected. The connection with the metal screws. How those came 'unscrewed' is beyond me as it was only 3 months old at that point. My guess is that they were never secured at the factory and just pushed together. If you are out there and all of a sudden your US goes.....check that first.

I have had the top cap off a couple times, and everytime I just cant believe they have a compass and CB just bouncing around in there.

I have made it a point to check over all the screws on the Terrova as they become loose over time. I had one of the screws completely back out of the base just last week. After closer inspection I notice that the screws that hold that plastic sides on, are only tapped about 1 - 1.5 turns into the aluminum frame. I now added some loc-tite to see if they hold better.
