Looking to change out a Lowrance, nothing but issues!!!

Anyone have any feecback on the Hummingbird 898ci?

Very interested in the XM Weather, has anyone used this unit on LOTW?

Is the Side Imaging a valueable tool?

Really appreciate any thought!

If you can swing side image, do it.

I have the 997c Side imaging and I like it. It is expensive but it does some amazing things. It helps me find weeds and structure that I normally would not see. I really like Humminbirds customer service (they answer the phone and actually help you). If you don't think you will use the SI features then I would not spend the money. Check out Humminbirds website for videos and youtube videos.

although not that particular model, i replaced my lowrance with a humminbird due to problems i had as well. What i can say is that the humminbird is fantastic. Easier to use, more accurate and works at higher speeds without losing the bottom. If i need a new finder right now, i would buy humminbird over a lowrance any day.

I love my Hbird. But to answer your XM WX question it's a real bummer because it only works in the US. In the fine print it states that it does not include Canada. I asked a similar question on another forum and was lucky to have a guy answer that had used it on LOTW. My thinking was that even though Canada was not included maybe there was a bit of leeway right on the border, but apparently there isn't. He stated that your radar cuts off right on the border in the middle of LOTW. So your fine if the storm is approaching from the south, but if it's coming from the north you are SOL as far as seeing it on your unit.

Thanks for the replies. I have spoken to several fisherman who have used the XM Weather with success on LOTW. Its very important to me that this features works as LOTW is the only lake I fish.

I am going back and forth on the side imaging also.

I did get an 898c SI. I am now being told that I will need a high speed transducer to run around (42 mph is my speed) and see the depth on my map. Does anyone run on without the additional high speed transducer?

I have experience with the 997, and I believe it uses the same transducer. Many H-bird guys are using a second internal transducer for high speed readings. They are also doing this to protect the expensive side imaging transducer and mounting that higher on the transom to protect it from damage, which hurts high speed readings as well. Our work boat has a 997 SI and the high speed readings are not good until we slow back down. There are many other good websites out there that are H-bird specific that contain loads of info.

Good luck, you'll love the SI

Regarding high speed readings with the SI transducer what I found is if you position the transducer according to HB's instructions you will loose bottom contact when up on plane. You have a couple of options to gain depth readings at speed. Try angling the back of the transducer down, and not level like HB suggests. I did this on my 997 and it worked much better. Your other option, and the one I ultimately went with was to purchase another regular dual beam transducer and mount it on the other side of my transom to use for on plane readings. This allows you to keep your SI transducer up and out of the way (you only use SI at slow speeds). The regular transducer is cheap, and you can purchase a y cable to connect both transducers to your unit. I"ve had no more issues with this settup (mounted on a Crestliner Fishawk)

I am in the market for Humminbird SI and will be mounting on a crestliner fish hawk. If not too much trouble I'd love to see pictures where your transducers are mounted.

Any big differences between the 997 vs the 998? and if so is it better to go down in screen size and go the route of a 898 vs 997? (both about the same price.

Thanks
