Location: VA | I am anal about SHARP hooks. I sharpen every factory hook, that said I think there's better. I know for sure that many crankbaits (bass and striper fishing experience) do better with some brand hooks over others, and the same applies to jerk baits.
What is your favorite crank bait hook size and brand?
What is your favorite glide bait hook size and brand?
I'm guessing 4/0-5/0 is close on the sizes for most lures, what about the brands?

| I like eagle claw 774s for 3/0-5/0, and then mustad 3551s for 6/0-8/0
Hard to answer the size question with so many sizes of baits out there. 14" jakes use 7/0s and a shallow raider uses 3/0s I think.
I'd guess most cranks 6-10 inches have 3/0-4/0s on them
I just have a large plano box with a few of each size and use whatever is closest... |

Location: Land of the Musky | I like Mustad hooks myself. For size, IMO the most important thing is to make sure your hooks extend outside of the body width and/or do not hug up against the body of the bait. It should improve hookups. You may need to upgrade to a round bend hook or up the size slightly or "T" a hook. Also, longer shank hooks on some lures may be needed to get the hook points way from the body/belly of the lure. Just a few things to consider. I do not think it happens too often but on gliders you may find changing the hooks is a bad thing since the manufacturer may have used a specific hook to fine tune the action of that specific bait. On bucktails I am of the opinion you will boat more fish if you do not run a 7/0 vs a 5/0 just due to penetration of the smaller hook. From a lure making point of view I think more customers like the larger hooks though like a 6/0 or 7/0 on tier bucktails. Just keep them sharp and you should be fine.
