I have an opportunity to purchase a one-season old 150 E-Tec from a water ski club at about 1/2 the cost of new. Comes with warranty. Thinking of repowering an older boat that I really like to get better economy and upgrade to newer technology.

Don't know much about the E-tec's most of folks around here run Mercury or 4 stroke Yamaha.

Curious on your experiences with Evinrude/BRP.

Thank you,

Mark

I've run E-TECs on my rig since 2008. Flawless for me except one odd starter problem where a gear had broken teeth (and that might have been from someone else running the motor and trying to start it when it was running). Unbelievable economy over a carbed motor! No screwing around with choking, warm up, cold starts, and the rest of that crap. Just turn the key and go. If you can get the 1/2 price plus the warrante, jump on it! Unless they beat the motor to death by running it overpropped you'll have a great motor for years to come from what I've seen on my rig.

Get a printout of the motor history. The EMM will store all data and give you hours, how much time at what rpm and tons of other info. Have the dealer print one out and look it over. They can't hide anything including error codes, fault situations, over revving, and on and on. It's all there for you to see before you buy.

There's motors that have blown and motors that will blow. Period.

I'm not an Evinrude or BRP guy, but it comes down to the same advice I'd give for any motor- warrantee rocks, but you've got to have local customer support to make it worthwhile. If you've got an authorized, knowledgable mechanic nearby, you should be good to go. It's like the Fichts. They were known as being pieces of crap in the mid range hp's. Yet, some guys are running them trouble free ten years later. Not saying the E-Tecs are known as crap, they're not. But I've heard of problems, and I've heard of fans loyal to the death.

I'm a Yamaha guy all the way, but if the price is right, you've got a decent amount of warrantee left, and someone local to service it and provide advice/sales/service, I'd not be too afraid of it.

The motor has a warranty, and is priced right. Correct?

I've been very happy with my E-tec 150, snaps my Ranger 1860 up on plane, easy to start, virtually no smoke on start up, very quite. If you get it make sure what oil setting it's programmed for. I've been running the XD 100 oil on the regular setting but if it's been reprogrammed for the 100 setting and you use something lower you can damage the engine.

What ski team ? Reason I ask is I bought a nice 200 ox66 yam off a ski team I got a great deal ,motor was installed mid season and had roughly 30 hrs when I got it .The team switched to etechs and if its the same guy I dealt with he was great. Make sure how much warranty you get though somtimes mfg's consider a ski team motor commercial use

I don't have a 150, I have a 225 HO. It is the best motor I have ran. Period. I had another popular brand last and it gave me a lot of problems. My brother in law has had multiple of that same brand and had the same experience. It boils down to the fact that there will be some problems with all brands. You usually only hear the bad side as everyone likes to complain, but few will give good reviews. If you are getting a good price, and warranty buy it before someone else does.

I've been running an 200 e-tech for 5yrs now. I bought mine when they had the 7yr warranty promotion. I put about 60hrs and threw a rod. Powerhead replaced under warranty in a day. BRP was great about getting new powerhead to dealer no questions asked. Now I've got almost 500hrs on new powerhead and haven't had a lick of problems, the thing still starts like a new car. Just doing the scheduled maint. You'll probably have to change plugs before 300hrs. You'll know when you need new plugs.

Ive also had problems with mercs too. Blew a powerhead on a 200opti and I wont even go there.

I've been running a 150 ETEC since 2006. So far so good with the engine. The maintence is easy, it starts like a champ, its great on the gas and has little exhaust. We have a authorized dealer about 2 miles down the road. What else could one ask for?!?

Been running a 225 HO for three years now. Love it. Very quick holeshot, high end speed, no smoke, and most importantly no problems so far.

I have an 08 150 E-tec tiller with about 900 hours on it, 98% under 750 rpms trolling, and have only replaced the impellar, fuel filter, and spark plugs every 300 hours. Has been a very strong motor thus far. My mechanic says there is no reason I shouldn't get 5000 hours out of it if it is properly maintained.
