Posts: 1296 Location: WI | Only used it 3 times, all this week. Sometimes is makes a whirring noise kind of like an Abu that needs to be oiled but not really a screaming dying cat noise like that. Normal? I would guess not but just want to find out. It is the level wind version. Otherwise great reel even though the magnetic brake is ultra sensitive.

Posts: 676 Location: Wisconsin | Make sure to keep her oiled up, I usually remove the side plate after each outing and hit the bearings and moving parts.

Posts: 1169 Location: New Hope MN | You have to ues GREASE! Mine did the same thing up on the spring bay outing last fall. I oiled and oiled and oiled and it still didn't work right (for awhile it would). I greased it up when i got home and fished it the rest of the fall HARD. Not one issue. Only oil the level wind (if you got one with it).

Posts: 1296 Location: WI | Do you guys only remove the left side plate? I did that today and greased it and it seemed to run more quietly.

Posts: 1296 Location: WI | Well the reel is noisy again and won't cast far. Lame. I could send it in but I just started vacation and won't get it back until it's over. I guess I'll strip it down and lube it up hardcore this time. My Luna went down today too, the D company is getting no love from me. Edited by JKahler 6/5/2010 5:42 PM

Posts: 1296 Location: WI | Well I tried to lube it up, put it back together and now it makes a subtle clicking noise when I reel. Now I'm too scared to try and fix the Luna or I'll screw that up. I guess I'll send em in and watch tv for 2 weeks instead of fishing. I hate my life.

Mines doing the same thing, and brand new. It almost sounds like a weak clicker noise. I plan to call daiwa monday and get a fix somehow. It's disappointing that my cheap 5 yr old abus are still going (noisily) and a brand new reel that cost twice as much is making as much noise.

Posts: 1296 Location: WI | Guest, does it click when the drag is loose? Mine only clicks when I tighten the drag down and start reeling.

Have you tried adjusting the brake? If they are too loose it can make a noise while casting.

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | If it makes a clicking noise when you reel in the line only, it is the anti/rev pawl slapping on the anti/rev ratchet, just tighted the pawl, easy fix. It is part # E48-9001

Posts: 1296 Location: WI | How do you tighten it? It just seems to sit loosely on a post next to the gear. That piece just fell out while I was greasing the gears. Edited by JKahler 6/6/2010 10:52 PM

Sorry this is a bit off subject but I had my Saltist clutch spring break on me this weekend. Reel is still under a year old so I could send it back to Daiwa or could try to replace the part. I've tried sending emails to them with no reply. Does anyone have a reel service contact or know the part #? Thanks for the help.

Posts: 32930 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Wait, you sent them emails THIS WEEKENED and want a reply already? I haven't answered all the emails I received over the weekend and today yet, and I've been on it since 7 AM. Patience.

No, I sent them emails last week. It broke on the N. WI. opener. I sent them emails on Tue and Thur of last week. I am actually a very patient individual. Heck, I fish for muskies so I should be.

Posts: 115 Location: Birch Run | They will get back to you, but I would just go ahead and send to the service center in Cerritos, CA. You will have it back in probably two weeks, those springs break quite often so I would order extras.

Mine seems to make noise randomly. When it makes noise on the cast it also makes noise on the retrieve. The retrieve noise sounds like the pawl, but doesn't explain the casting noise. Maybe I shouldn't have opened her up to check out the guts before using it. It's not bad, just a little worrisome with it being new. I'm gonna tear it down tonight so I have an excuse to test it tomorrow.

Posts: 1296 Location: WI | I'm just going to send mine in. If I have to send it in again after that then it will go up for sale.

Posts: 676 Location: Wisconsin | These are noisy reels, but well worth the slight noise you hear during retrieve or cast. You really need to keep the reel oiled however, especially the bearings. Do not use grease!! Grease will bring in dirt and sand to the reel, it will also gum up the bearings and Keep dirt in the reel and that will lead to more issues. If you keep the bearings on the spool shaft oiled, the reel is quieter, but really, it isn't a big concern as far as the noise compared to what the reel does for performance.

Pretty sure I figured mine out. When I took it apart before one of the springs on the yoke fell off. This caused the gears to move and occasionally give me the grinding sound. I put both springs back and it didn't seem to make noise, but still need to water test with lures to put a load on it.

My take on them is this...since they are a live bait reel, they are not made to stand up to the rigors of casting. Got a 20LW last year mid year. Started to make a grinding noise when cast. Oiling it gave it a temporary fix. Then the spring on the spool release broke....sent it to Daiwa over the winter, had the spool release spring replaced, and any other maintenance issues fixed they could find. The third day I used it this year, the grinding noise started again, then the spring in the spool release broke and it was a brand new spring. These reels aren't yet made for the punishment of casting IMO, especially the spring where you have to flip the spool release twice for each cast. No more for me. Have a 20 LW and a 40 LW for sale if anyone wants them....going cheap!

Posts: 676 Location: Wisconsin | I have used mine now almost exclusively and have never had an issue casting 8 - 9 hours a day. I know several others that have them and not an issue. Might have just gotten a bad reel....it these are designed for surf casting in salt water, I think they can take it.

Posts: 7 | I also noticed a little bit of noise the first time I used mine. I was throwing a topwater and it too sounded like an abused abu while my bait was in the air. I switched over to a crankbait, dawg and a dcg and I never heard anymore noise from the reel. I don't know what it was from, but it made me a little wary. Everything works great so far, just a little noisy.

Posts: 1296 Location: WI | I used grease as the manual said to. When it got noisy, the distance on my casts was cut in half. Try any harder and you get a backlash.

Skunk, IMO they wont truly burn cowbells, u can move em at a medium pace w/o getting too tired, but if you really try to burn them hard w/ a saltist you will burn out very quickly, seems like the cranking power isnt there. i have the 40/30/and used the 20 too. pick up line nice though. i wish they were lighter and less bulky. overall they are pretty good for the price
