It looks as if I might be taking a trip to Minnesota for a few days at some point in July. If you had to pick one lake to fish for 3 days and not hire a guide, where would you go?

I would hit a smaller body of water if your not going to hire a guide. Learning it won't be so over wealming as some of the bigger bodies could be. Take your pick with the water temps like they are now fishing should be pretty good all over the state.

I would second what Pedro said.

For a little more specific help, are you heading to MN only to fish or are you going to fish here and do other things? Are you going to stay in a specific location or can you go anywhere?

If it was me and I could fish anywhere in MN, I would do one of two things. I would either fish the east side of Lake Vermillion and fish the big reefs there. Or, I would head to the Bemidji area and fish Lake Bemidji, Plaganette, Little Wolfe, and/or Big Lake. The Bemidji area lakes are relatively easy to fish and have both good numbers and good size structure. Also, if one lake isn't producing, it isn't far to trailer to another. One can easily fish two or even three lakes in a day in that area.

Good luck.

well has crowded has vermilion gets in July,,,Id still say fish it and target ALL the bouy areas,,,anytime you see a bouy fish it,,your most of the time on a spot that a muskie will use,,,leech requires a longer learning curve,,and Miile Lacs is a mystery right now,,,,if your comming near the metro,,, Independence is heavily stocked and most of the fish are in 10ft or less,,if an ecentric millionaire offered me some money to lead him to a fish it would be indy Id choose,,,but I would check the fishing reports section first to see how bad they poisoned the weeds on Indy which can effect the fishing

What I mentioned are the lakes I would like to fish if I could fish anywhere I wanted. But, like many people, I have a very busy schedule and don't have the ability to fish anywhere I want. My fishing outings depend greatly on where I can fish based almost entirely on available time and where my fishing partners are able to fish.

Because of where my friends, in-laws, and I live, I mostly fish Minnetonka, Forest Lake, Little Boy, and Wabedo. Occasionally, maybe twice a year, I get to Shamineau and Alexander. On rare occasion (maybe once a year) I get to Leech Lake, one of the Bemidji area lakes, or Mille Lacs. We have caught nice fish on all of those lakes and there is nothing wrong with any of them, but "if" I could fish anywhere I wanted to, then I'd go to the lakes I mentioned. And that is a big "if".

After finally getting my wife to agree, I have my first ever trip to Vermillion planned this summer. Only problem is we're going to the NW side at Life of Riley's resort. Its a nice family resort, (an absolute requirement for the wife and kids), but I'm not so sure about the location. I know there are nice fish all over the lake, but I'd rather be on the east side of the lake where there are more reefs. I like rocks.

Truth is I'm happy to get on any lake with Muskies in it. Sure beats work.

Big Mantrap near Park Rapids. Awesome body of water with lots of quality fish and beautiful scenery!
