Fished Portage Lake in the UP last week. Started at 47 degrees opening day afternoon in the main lake and by the time we left it was 64 degrees. The walleyes and pike in open water were using 35 foot depths to rest during the day and fed up to the ten foot level at low light. The water they were in was 40 degrees and I doubt they wanted anything to do with the warm surface stuff unlike the fish using the shallows which stay active during the day.
