I am hoping to book a few days in the middle of August fishing for a giant. I am trying to stay in the states (I know this limits my chances), and want to head to Minnesota. As far as opinions go, where do I have the best chance of catching a 50"+ fish casting at this time? Metro-lakes? Mille-Lacs? Vermillion? Leech? Minnetonka? I am going to try and go during the week and check on the moon phases before I book obviously...

See you are from Illinois and i assume you haven't fished those lakes lakes listed? I would make a new list of smaller lakes: Detroit lakes area, Bemidji Area, smaller lakes around Leech lake would be good starting points.... the lakes you mentioned are big and/or see a TON of pressure. I would pick a new moon and fish a lot after dark (another good reason to be on a smaller lake) Good luck.

If you are looking for a giant and haven't fished any of the big MN lakes I would suggest hiring a guide for the first day or two of your trip. There are many excellent guides in the State and once you pick the lake just ask for suggestions. We drove down from MN to Kinkaid three weekends ago and hired Chad Cain. He put us on a pattern that we never would have figured out because it simply doesn't exist on the large majority of the lakes up here. Good luck planning your trip!

I'd scratch the metro/tonka b/c the metro will be getting pounded that time of year, especially if your planning around a moon phase. I've spent a week on Vermilion in July and August during moon phases and I honestly did not think it was as bad as advertised as far as pressure goes. The weekends were obviously busy but during the week it was fine. Give Spring Bay Resort a try.

I'm booked with Kevin Cochran in Bemidji in early August and according to him the first two weeks of August are very good out there. Hard to go wrong with Vermillion, too. Stay at Spring Bay and Steve will set you up.

Lake Vermilion, Spring Bay Resort! You will definetly have that chance at a monster fish. And have a great stay with great people as well.

The nice thing about that time of year is that the nights up north start cooling off and the water temps start coming down. It can be a great time to fish especially if July made the water hot, the fish can put the feed bag on and be very active.

The truth is that it all depends on which lake(s) are going at that time and it is almost impossible to predict. On most years Vermillion, Mille Lacs, and Bemidji would give you the best chance at that time. But then one never knows for sure. Your best bet would probably be Vermillion. That is where we're heading this year.

The truth is that you'd have a good chance on many MN Muskie lakes then. There are many smaller lakes like Big Detroit, Alexander, Plaganette, Big, and Little Wolf that would also give you a good chance. There is nothing certain either and a person can get blanked even with the best guide.

Good luck.

FYI, the M.Inc chapter challunge is on Vermillion in August. I'd pick a date that doesn't include those days.

Anybody know the exact dates of that tournament? I did a search but I'm not sure I'm looking at the right event.

Thanks.
