Subject: Musky Spawn

Just wondering if anyone has seen any indication that the muskies have already spawned? Was planning on fishing south of Hwy. 10 on opening weekend and am wondering if the fish are post-spawn.

Hard to say without really going out and fishing for them. See fish really shallow still in waukesha county, but nothing is very active. The cold rain we had over the weekend didnt help it either.

Think its going to rain on the opener as well.

Outdoor News up here in Mn ran a story last week that stated that the DNT collected most of the eggs they needed the week before, which would have been April 13-15, and that toward the end many of the females had already dropped their eggs.

ice was off early, water warmed quick to roughly spawning temps and has mainly stayed there for the most part in Madison and elsewhere...not all fish are going to spawn (or attempt to) at the same time so some could have weeks ago and some could now....I'd suspect the majority will be done though by this weekend and looking to feed...should be a good May in southern WI...

The muskie have spawned or are spawning, here, in NCentral MN as of this past weekend and the weekend before. This is early. I witnessed muskies swimming in tandem, connected at the hip, so-to-speak two weekends ago. The males were chewed up a bit from the females, too. They have been trapping them on Leech Lake, for over a week (collecting scale/genetic samples) and taking eggs, I hear, out of the Park Rapids area, also.

Yo,
I have been watching a couple of fish by my dock this week, water temps are in the
mid 50's here on Vermilion. They are doing a lot of tailing and swimming around but I haven't seen them together yet.

The Fox Chain and Madison Chain fish spawn around the same time as I fish both regularly. The fish on the Fox Chain have been done and coming around for about a week and a half, which is 3 weeks ahead of last year, so I suspect they are mostly done in Madison as well.

You do understand that they don't actually "get together', don't you Ace?

At some point it time they have to go out to dinner and go to a movie don't they?
I have watched this female spawning for many years now, so I think I have it figured out.

Spawning is in full swing on Pewaukee Lake. I expect it to continue into the opener. Not all muskies spawn at the same time. Usually it's a two to three week deal because of the shallow end and deep end of Pewaukee. I was out with a few friends Wednesday night looking around after dark. Some areas had beat up spawning fish and other areas had very clean fish just getting ready to beat each other up.

Looks like it will be a good opener with most of the action from the horny males just like last year. The big girls will be shallow and available if you can get them to eat.

It's almost time......................
