| my trolling motor battery has a stripped nut on the terminal. the outside of the nut isnt stripped, it must be the inside. i cant even move it as i tried wrenching it already. there is limited room to work with since its in the boat and hooked up to the trolling motor. anyone have any ideas on how i can get this nut off of the battery. i dont want to cut the cables to my trolling motor. even if i did i would still have to get the nut off somehow. any suggestions?? thanks |

| They make a tool called a nut breaker. You should be able to get one at the hardware or auto store. They're not very expensive and will work in tight quarters. |

Guest, I've never seen a vice grips that would unthread a stripped nut. Maybe you could put a link up to one that does...

i am trying that nut breaker sunday, good point, maybe the rod is stripped and not the nut, then i am screwed, that would suck cause battery was new last yr |

| If the post is stripped just add some washers before the new nut and it should put you on good threads. |

| The first thing i would do before I risk breaking anything is clean off any corrosion with a baking soda and water mixture. Ideally you'd want to soak it, but you can't really do that if it's in a tight spot. In your case I'd cover the terminal post with a paper towel and pour the baking soda/water mixture over it a few times, let it soak for an hour in between. Step two would be soaking it with WD-40. Whatever you do, when you put it back together, coat the threads with di-electric grease. It helps with corosion, it provides a better electrical connection, and it makes things much easier to get apart next time. |

| super sharp small chisel and small hammer and start a point to start tapping it and work it out! lube it up good! |

Location: Mt. Zion, IL | if the stud breaks, get a battery terminal for the lead post from an auto parts store. Clamp it on the lead, and bolt up the terminal to the trolling motor wire. |
