Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> another 40" limit

The Solberg Lake association voted in favor of raising the size limit to 40". The process to get it on the DNR hearing ballots has begun.

Currently there are no muskies over 40" in the lake.

Hi Buddy.

Can Solberg lake support a 40" limit?

I don't know anything about that lake so I'd like to hear more.

Congrats on your initiative.

If it's the one in Price County, it's a very pretty lake that gets a fair amount of various traffic like fishermen and others also.

Yes, it is the one in Price County. A few avid muskie fishermen here on the lake consulted with the DNR fish biologist, who was found to be in favor of the higher limit, so they put it on the Association agenda. It passed by something like 35-20.

Most people target walleyes and panfish but the lake is aalso fairly heavily fished for muskies by both CPR types and unfortunitely too many of those that keep anything. We also have a public campground that is almost always full.

All 3 taverns on the lake have photo boards that display pics of muskies but only add a couple pics each year. Its hard to tell on some if they were released, other pics definitely were taken on shore somewhere.

I don't know if the lake itself can support this higher limit, I hope it can. I know of one legit 52" caught and released in 2000 and I know of 3 that were 49" to 51" kept between 1967 and 1973 (wifes uncle). The lake was pounded heavier in the late 60's into the 70's and the population did a nosedive. There were times in the 80's when it seemed like there wasn't a muskie in the lake. The fishing is much better now (or I've figured the lake out better?) but I was raised in Sayner and I still fish that Boulder Junction to Eagle River area a lot and Solberg is OK but not in same the class of the good Vilas County lakes.

The half dozen really serious muskie guys that have property here are pretty secret about how they fish and what they catch, but in discussing the prospect of this higher limit we found that we each catch on the average 10 to 27 legals a year with a big fish each year around 45" (all released).

How big is solberg and are there good numbers in it now? What is the food source for muskies?. The average depth also? Any natural reproduction in it?

Thanks for the info, Buddy.

Good luck!
