Subject: trolling motor - terrova or maxxum???

I just bought a boat and need to put a trolling motor on it. In the past, I have been using minn kota PD units but I have narrowed it down to two for this purchase. I will be buying a 70 or 80# thrust unit with 54" shaft. I want a terrova or a maxxum - never owned either. Is the terrova really much better than the power drive? If so, what would be best for my 1600 fish hawk in your opinion?
Thanks

I would highly recommend the 80 pound Terrova. Awesome trolling motors. I like the fact that you can move the foot pedal around the boat with the Maxxum you are pretty much stuck in one position. Also the foot pedal on the Terrova is alot shorter (in height) than the Maxxum's, which in my opinion makes fishing all day alot more comfortable on your legs, hip and back.

Another vote for the 80 Terrova. Each has their place, but I'm all about the Terrova. Bass guys hate them because they're don't turn as fast as a cable drive, and because they pretty much only ever fish from the bow. Muskie guys like them for reasons Mike listed, and I like it for the option of the remote. I carry my foot pedal in the event I lose a remote, but I use CoPilot all the time. And again, for the same reasons Mike mentions. I can run the motor from anywhere in the boat, and I'm balancing on a foot pedal in 3' seas. Terrova is a great motor.

Vote Terrova here to, I like the AP and the fact you can set it and fish not stand on the pedal all the time. Plus you have the advantage to upgrade to the I Piolet. I would go with a 60" shaft, better to have more than you need than not enough.

Thanks guys. I heard of some people saying they did not use the rocker foot pad to turn for the most part on the terrova. Would u agree with that and do you like that feature? If the rocker feature is not as usable then it wouldn't be much different than the tapping I did on my V2 - right/wrong? Do the terrovas turn any faster/slower?
I had a 60" on my 1650 Fish Hawk and it seemed a little too much for this boat for the most part. My new boat is 1650 again. The 70# was plenty powerful but I find the V2 to be lousy in millfoil or heavy weeds - terrova?

80lb Terrova - The stow and deploy system is great for that motor. I had a PD for 7 years. Not sure if the new ones are better. Last year was the first with the Terrova. Make sure your shaft is long enough for the boat and type of fishing and if you are hooking up a front sonar to your rig, go with the universal sonar. Rigging the terrova's is a pain with an external transducer. Pay the extra for the universal sonar.

imo the terrova foot pedal is a waste of space...i ran boats w/ the terrova and the rocker foot pad is useless..i used the right and left arrow and the on/off button...imo the terrova should have an option to use a Powerdrive foot pedal and that would make a lot more sense...imo you aren't going to be gaining much if anything going from a 70# PD V2 to a Terrova 80#....

I would actually recommend the Maxum. I had one on my 1750 Fishhawk and loved it. But it really depends on how you fish. If you get in spots that you need to turn quickly I would go with the cable also with you mentioning the milfoil you can at least run the trolling motor partially out of the water. I would base it on what you need for turn speen and what you are use to. Good luck with the decision.

i take that back...PD v2 60" shaft and ipilot is 1079, same terrova is with 80 lb is 300 more...imo again, I don't think the 10 lb thrust you gain w/ the terrova is worth it..the foot pedal stinks w/ the terrova imo ... 70 lb is going to do everything your 80 lb can on a terrova....go with 60" shaft as you can move the collar up and down as needed...to the post above..the PDs and Terrovas have a collar you can move up and down as needed and you can run the motor just below the surface of the water..

PD VR 80LB IS $1079.99 WITH NO FOOT PEDAL. TERROVA IS $1379. WITH THE FOOT PEDAL..

ok so add 80 bucks for the foot pedal then..still you are 200 ahead and have a more practical / use friendly foot pedal...again, i've run boats w terrovas and have a powerdrive..imo the terrova foot pedal is a waste of space ...80% of it isn't used by musky guys most likely...just my 2 cents ...if i were in the market i would buy a PD v2 over terrova ...besides having 10 lbs more thrust is there anything a terrova w/ ipilot will do over a pd v2 with ipilot? i guess if there is maybe i would buy a terrova but my understanding the ipilot on both is exactly the same...you only gain 10 lbs of thrust right?

For $1379 you can get the 80 Terrova with I Piolet to your door. At least the one my partner got cost that, or very close. Can't recall the lace he got it though, maybe he'll chime in on where.

is there anything a terrova w/ ipilot will do over a pd v2 with ipilot?

According to the website, the iPilot cannot be used in conjunction with the foot pedal on the pd. The iPilot remote replaces the foot pedal.

On the Terrova, the two can be used simultaneously.

I've been using the I-pilot for a couple of weeks and I would go with the terrova for that reason. The foot pedal is still functional with it and the advanced AP is better then the orginal AP. Spot lock is awesome if you want to stay on a spot, I've been sitting on 15-20 mph wind blown spots and have moved about 20-25 feet max. The track feature is good too. I had a maxxum before this motor and it was good but required constant attention for BC. The electronic aids on the terrova help improve my BC which helps me focus more on fishing.

Wow - thanks guys. After reading these great comments and mixing in my own ideas/notions I have ruled out the terrova and am now likely going with the V2 again or maybe a maxxum. I am sure the terrova is better but my $ may be better spent elsewhere. I still think 54" will be fine. I got sick of that 60" one sticking way up in the air when I was shallower.

I agree that 80% of the foot pedal on the terrova is wasted space. That said, the 20% of the pedal I use on the terrova is so much more user friendly than the pedal on the newer pd, in my opinion. It is easier to stow and deploy, and the digital steer seems more responsive(quicker) than that of the pd. I run a 70 lb pd on one rig and the terrova 80 on another and the difference is very noticable. I need all 80 lbs to hold in heavy current at times and wish I had more on occasion. To say a 70 lb will do the same as an 80 lb is saying a 7' rod will do the same as an 8' rod. However, the 70lb will suffice just fine for the 16' aluminum boat you describe.

That said, I completely agree with Brad in that there should be multiple pedal options for the Terrova. An 8" wide by 5" deep pedal would be great. That rocker is a joke on the Terrova, does not respond as well as the tap switches, and I know nobody who uses that feature to date. The pedal is so much more dependable than the ones on my old pd's though, and I wouldn't trade this motor for anything else I see out there right now.

IMO the maxxum is only good for one thing....quicker response. Thats it.
Terrova is the way to go imo.
As far as the PD's are concerned how are the new pedals? I had the older style pedal on my pd and would go through at least 2 pedals a season, at 70 bucks a crack this was bogus, when I bought my terrova I bought a spare pedal...that was over 2 years ago, its never been out of the rod locker. never had a issue with my pedal. to me thats worth the extra cost to buy the terrova, plus they turn a little faster too.

If you want a quicker response there is a product that will improve the response time on a Terrova.

The ease of stowing and deploying is worth the extra money easily. I've owned 2 powerdrives and I went through a bunch of pedals and got into alot of fights with them stowing and deploying. Owned my 80lb Terrova since they first came out, 1 pedal and still deploys with ease. Get a Ram stabilizer, and like previously stated the pedal is overated but still is comfortable to use all day. Also compared to my powerdrives is a little faster turning wise.

For what it's worth here's a vote for Maxxums. Where I fish I probably go to shore four-eight times a day (depends on the skill on the Angler) to get a lure off the closest rock. To do this I lift the trolling motor half way out of the water and proceed in. Once we get the lure unstuck I proceed back out with the motor half out of the water. If I couldn't do this I would guess we'd be down a lure or two each day (mostly DCG at $25.00 per pop). I tried the electric control TM's for a year and it just didn't work for how and where I fish.

I also like the fact that I can tell which way I'm going just by how my foot is positioned on the peddle with out having to look at the indicator. They turn on a dime went I suddenly discover I'm two feet from a rock I forgot about! Saved my a$$ more than a few times.

Still I suppose that the electric control TM's are fine for many situations, they just didn't work well for me.

Not only that but Maxxums are real tough. Can't tell you how many hours I have on the one I have or how many rocks I've ran into, but it's now on it's fourth year, and still doing great. I used to have problems with the lift rope breaking, but I think I'm only on the second one with this motor.

I might also say this I sit when I fish on a stand-up butt seat in the front, and run the motor mosty sitting down. Sounds like a pussy way to muskie fish, but it works for me.

If your looking at an 80lb Terrova with iPilot be prepared to wait til after May 1st. I foolishly sold the TM on my boat before realizing this. At least I have some time to get all the new wiring installed.
