Posts: 24 | any opinions on the new 4stroker from yamaha? 4 stroke that performs like a 2 stroke? could be a game changer. have not heard of any on a multispecies boat - just the bass boats.

Posts: 2323 Location: Stevens Point, WI | From what I was told when I was at the Bassmaster Classic, the SHO will not be available for sometime yet. Everyone being produced is going on the back of the Skeeter bass boats right now.

Posts: 24 | I have seen a few ranger bass boats for sale with sho's on them - down south. i would think yamaha would want to sell as many as they can with the economy/boat sales reductions over the past 2 yrs.

Posts: 1663 Location: Kodiak, AK | Yeah, I've seen some Ranger Z boats (pics) with them on, and have read of a couple of guys who've ridden in them and the initial reports are good. I think the speed and power are there as advertised. It's the technology that will have to prove itself. Not just the engine design itself with the lighter weight and the cylinder walls, but simple stuff like the oil pumps on the HPDI's a few years ago. I'm a Yamaha guy all the way. Part of me is glad I repowered last year with a 225 Sport, but part of me wishes I'd had a shot to repower with a SHO. I don't know if you'll see any/many on Ranger multi species or salt boats right away, as they've got 25" motors and I'm pretty sure the SHO is available in 20". But I could easily be mistaken in either regard.

Posts: 2384 Location: On the X that marks the mucky spot | I spoke with Grampa Joe Carlson about the SHO and he was impressed. He was running one on the new 621 and it threw that boat on plane with 3 people in it. The only downside that's known right now is that it's pretty thirsty. I'd be very interested in repowering with that motor if it is as advertised.

Posts: 1663 Location: Kodiak, AK | Very cool. I stand corrected. Seems they can put a 20" on the 600 series. When I called Ranger last spring about my repower, they told me the 600 series needed the longer shaft.

Posts: 24 | i had the same ? - i see the sho is only in 20" shaft now. yamaha claims REDUCED fuel consumption over the vmax 2 2 stroke. problem is that number can be very misleading. like a verado - might be better than engine "x" at cruising speed but wot is sucks the gas. the new yamaha is a 4.2l and i would think that would suck gas wot or during acceleration. i would love to see the gas use at the higher rpms vs the 2 strokes. agree about having to prove the technology - lighter can be stronger (aka titanium) but they need to prove reliability. yamaha has had a good track record with technology in the past.

Posts: 2384 Location: On the X that marks the mucky spot | Fly, it was a 300hp and I suspect they may be making that size in the larger shafts for the saltwater crowd. It also may be a prototype. Badger, I'm no gear-head but I would think a 3.3L engine spinning at 6000rpms is going to use less gas then a 4.2L engine at 6000 rpms. Even if it does burn a little more at WOT, if you can get that kind of performance along with the reliability of a 4 stroke I'm all in!

It also may be a prototype. I was thinking something must be up with that rig, but figured I'd bow out and stop with my hypothosizing! LOL. It wasn't adding up for me....621 with a 250 and a 20" shaft going surprisingly fast....something was missing. There've been rumors that their offshore motors will soon be SHO's as well, so a 300/25" prototype out there somewhere would make sense. How big was that monster? Was it a V8?

That old V8 was one powerful motor. I drove Larry's on his 24'er and it threw that Titanic out of the water with 3 guys in it (2 in the back seats).

Posts: 24 | all depends. the 1.7 and 2.6l verados will suck the gas when it is being pushed through by its supercharger. no way to predict fuel useage from basic specs. Edited by badger 4/13/2010 2:24 PM
