I have a couple of questions about my Mercury 2008 9.9HP Four Stroke outboard?

1. To tilt the motor you have to reach a lever that is halfway down the back of the shaft. The manual shows a lever Under the tiller handle that would be much easier but I don’t see one there?

2. It is extremely had to start when cold, my friend said that all Four Strokes are like that?

3. There is a Throttle Only button on the motor. When would I ever want to use it?

Thanks for any help!
Tony.

Mine has the power T'N'T so I can't help you there. Yes, it's a dog to start when cold. Prime it, choke it, press and hold the button to lock out the shift while you advance the throttle handle to almost full speed, hit the starter, back off the throttle and wait for it to warm up so you can take the choke off and troll. A pain in the rear and it will die in a heartbeat if you take the choke off too quick before it warms. But what alternative is there other than an old old carbed 2 stroke that possibly was on the back of the boat as Washington crossed the Delaware? (They painted over it in the picture)

I was patiently waiting for the Evinrude E-TEC version of a 15HP for a kicker so I could ditch the 4 stroke, but they came out with an abomination that weighs 180#. Now that would have been nice, just press the starter and fish, no more playing 4 stroke games. Great running, no fouling, no smoking, no changing sump oil, too bad it was so blasted heavy and obviously not meant for us musky/walleye guys to use as a kicker.

Don't know if this will help, mine is a 2002 Merc 9.9 4-stroke:

1: Mine only has the lever down on the side

2: Mine would barely start when cold and needed the choke on for it to run, then I rebuilt the carb, problem solved.

3: This would allow you to warm the engine up with a little throttle without having it in gear.
