What lakes in the Duluth area, if any, have a catchable population of muskies in them. I know Vermillion is to the north, but is quite a drive.

Try Island Lake, These muskies should be coming of age........ Or a little more North...............LOTW......

Vermilion, and St. Louis, used to be good. Maybe go East into North West, WI.

The St louis river is where its at. I know guys who were averageing 6-13 fish a day last fall on it. I know that some of the guys on here really don't want to let the secret out of the bag, but the St louis is unreal.

A "guest" asks for info and a "guest" says omg they catch 6-13 a day on the river....funny stuff. All decent sized muskie lakes in MN have good populations there is nothing magical about the river. It's just like anywhere else...you have to put in ALOT of time...don't expect to come up for a 2 day trip and catch much unless you hire a guide. 11,000 acres is alot of water. Even more so with Island Lake. It's just not an easy lake to learn. I've been fishing it for 5 years and trust me you can go an entire day or more and not see a fish. Good luck.

The St. Louis is now VHS infested water. Make sure you take the necessary precautions if you fish there.

Both WI and MN DNR quit stocking the river 5 years ago, so please handle the fish with care.

All listed above are waters in the near area... both Island Lakes, St. Louis, Vermilion up the road, Dumbell, Crescent, Bouder are some of the smaller lakes up the shore.

On the St. Louis comment, it still requires a lot of learning to dial into the river; hit the right pattern and time on any body of water and 6+ fish days can happen.

Island (Duluth) is an interesting lake and tough nut to crack (for me), but there are some pigs in there if you take the time to learn it. Island (by Moose), heard some guy with a cabin on the lake did a good job killing many muskies because he thought they were eating his walleyes; this has apparently hurt the fishery. Vermilion, no comment needed. The little lakes up the shore, good numbers and some have potential for a nice fish. I learned to fish muskies on these lakes. As a kid with a bass spinnerbait, use to have many 4+ fish days by myself but don't think I ever cracked the 40" mark.

Island Lk just north of Duluth as Spiny Waterfleas do take necessary precautions there as well. Island Lk and St Louis River would be the closest waters with a decent chance at a 50 incher.

The DNR wants to see if and how much natural reproduction is occuring. It is occuring, but it seems like the WI strain is more prominent than the leechers. I could be wrong, but that has been my experience. All fish 33" and under are naturally reproduced fish.

It will be interesting to see if VHS will do some damage or not.

I think the leechers are more prevalent in the river as a whole, but there are areas that the WI fish outnumber them. Seems to really be locational in those regards.

I was the "guest" who posted this. I forgot to add the name. I'm actually from Bemidji and looking at a job in Duluth. Just looking to see if Duluth muskies are going to tickle my fancy. I like to get on the water everyday after work, so driving to vermillion everyday is out of the question. Looking at the local musky fishery primarily...

Depending on where you live both Island and the St. Louis are very close with the river being closest if you live in the city. Feel free to shoot me a PM if you have additional questions.
