Anyone out there know how to strip what looks like house paint off a Hughes River drop belly???? If it is a pain in the lower torso I would send it to have it done, much like one would finish furniture...I don't want to screw up the outer layer of the original if possible...any ideas or takers? Gracious muchacos, buenos dias! Spongola

If the original finish is still there use acetone. It will remove the house paint, but won't touch the epoxy finish if washed off in clear water as soon as the nasties are off the finish.

DO NOT drink the acetone after, or smoke while using. If you are smoking, put your shoes out, they are on fire.

LOL Stever! I'll have to go get another can, Sponge Babe + friends had a cocktail party last week + used what we had on some uninvited guests...made for some cool vapor trails as they leaped from the deck![;)] Does it matter if it is water or oil base paint?[:sun:]

Acetone will remove either. And alter your genetic code, too.[:knockout:]

Sponger, if you're worried about ruining the clearcoat, try using a small amount of mineral spirits to start with. That stuff is pretty mild.
If that doesn't work, soak it in moonshine[:p]

Sponge, house paint is impossible to remove from a hughes river. You can just send it to me and then you don't have to worry about it.

BTTT....DIP OR RUB!!!!

The acetone will work on that Burt too. Dip it in a small bowl full and wipe with rags. Be careful not to leave it in too long. Just a couple minutes will strip that paint right off. The acetone will start to “eat” away the abs plastic and will also breakdown the bond between the two half’s of the bait, but it sure beats sanding.
I like to use Testors model spray paint. They have some nice colors like flat olive drab –makes a good walleye back, and their Jade metallic looks great in a perch pattern. I’ve found that a clear lacquer coat goes on thicker than just a plain clear coat.
Have fun and wear gloves

THANK YOU NWR!!!! BUT--do I dip or rub the Hughes...will the thin latex rubber gloves suffice, or will the acetone eat through them...should I do this in an airtight room...[:0]

Sponge,
Send the bait to Durst Products and get it repainted and coated in Durst Stump Knocker!

I recommend the airtight room for artistic influence. I’m not sure about the rubber gloves because I don’t wear them, but I thought it would be good advice. I bet it will eat through thin ones though. If you are just trying to remove a small spot I’d just dip a rag and wipe the affected area, but if you want to refinish dunk the whole thing.

Thanks be to Capt Larry + NWR....I'll send the bait off + put a pair of thin latex gloves in a small bowl just to see if the chem. eats through them! I'm exhausted after 2 days of patty cake&^%&^$^$*&%(*Y[::)]

Use a rag and rub the offending paint off the beautiful original finish. No worries about the chemical. It is the solvent in Nail Polish remover, which our fine ladies have used for years to remove the paint from their finger and toe nails....wait a MINUTE!!! Maybe that's IT!! NAAAHHHH!!! Too easy.[]
