Location: SE Wisconsin | The ice is turning black and honeycombing here in SE Wisconsin and I can’t resist sitting in my boat parked in the garage. I reach for the loose Jake from the council dash, it’s been there since November 4th, the last time I was on open water. I blow the dust off and consider replacing the hooks, two of the shanks on the back treble are cut – it’s been that way since that cold November day. The garage door is open to air it out a little, it’s been a long winter. A warm breeze carries the scent of the lake I live on and I savor it. I look at the wall with my rods displayed and put my hands behind my head and lean back. The cork handles are dark where I grip them, and the line looks dull – I better flip or replace it. I shake my head and think, “Man, last year was a hell of a season.” I can hear my wife yell for me from the front door, she thinks I’m picking up fallen branches once hidden from the snow. I snicker and contemplate hopping out of the boat and getting back to it, but the Big Kahuna hanging on the wall has stories to tell and I decide to listen. I close my eyes and think about the PMTT event on the Eagle River Chain I fished with good friend, James. We were cruising across Otter Lake against some rollers when my hat flew off. We turned around and picked it up, all the while a pontoon full of girls cheered us on. Humored, we waved and I hit the throttle and opened her up. We hadn’t cleared 10 series of whitecaps before I learned the floor board was rotting after James seat ripped out of the floor and sent him flying. I distinctly recall his feet where his head was and then disappearing behind me. I eased her down to neutral and turned to ask if he was okay, but I couldn’t speak – I was laughing too hard! I collected myself just enough to help him up and look over the damage. James said he was okay, just a little soar in the back, but he’s a tough guy, who knows how he really felt. His face was as red as a tomato when he told me to, “Just go.” The pontoon of girls had ceased cheering and now passed us by at no more than 20 yards. I can’t really describe the faces they made, there were too many to remember each, but I’ll say this, a loud windy day never sounded so quiet just before one of them asked politely, “Are you okay?” “Sam?” Asked my wife. “Hey sweetie, I was just thinking. . . Awwe, never mind, I wish you had been there. I was just thinking about being on the water last year.” I replied. "Thinking about the glory days, hah?" She questioned. "Something like that." I laughed, before climbing down over the keel. …Some states are enjoying open season while the upper Midwest waits – patiently. A month and a half doesn’t seem too far off, it will be here before we know it. Attachments ---------------- ![]()

Posts: 897 | I like your writing style, Sam, reminds me of Ron Schara and Sam Cook. Keep up the good work, seems like there should be a place for this in a musky magazine somewhere.

Posts: 620 Location: Seymour, WI | It's getting to the point where I don't even watch TV at night anymore. I just go out in the garage and sit in my boat, go through my tackle, play with the gps... sometimes just sit back and drink a beer.

Location: Northern Wisconsin | Good read! The musky bug seems to be hitting me hard this year too. I have constantly been examining my rods and reels and looking through my lures just dreaming about being on the water.

Already had the boat out in the Eau Claire area. Took it out for a ride on Tuesday on Dells Pond. Only boat out on the water. Motor started right up and purred like a kitten. Did some scouting with the GPS looking for some spots to fish once the season opens. As far as fishing goes, been fishing open water all winter catching pike and bass. Nothing beats a river that doesn't freeze over. Made the winter much more tolerable.

Posts: 633 Location: Bloomington, MN | Very well written Mr. Sam! I can relate to your experience minus the kind and considerate wife part. You now have me worried about the wood flooring in my boat. How did you fix the potential helper monkey situation?

My wife would say "get out of your boat you loser and get the dog crap picked up from the back yard!!!" lol

Location: SE Wisconsin | Nice Joel, lol! Clark, we tried rotating the base and screwing it in, which worked for a couple more hours, but was so loose we ended up putting the seat on the floor behind the drivers seat. He ended up sitting on the edge of the front casting deck floor. Very funny.
