anyone have that link to the video of that figure 8 fish where bob mesikhomers boat partner starts slapping the water with his cowgirl and gets that fish to slurp it?

should be called how NOT to catch a fish on a 8 - this fish was suicidal and could/should have been caught on the first high outside: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5O-UXmO1fME

I didnt think the fish was suicidal, seemed to get that way after a few slaps tho.
thanks a lot!

Are you kidding me??? That fish could have been caught in the first 15 seconds ...easy. It is a good video on how not to get a fish to commit in an 8.... no change of speed, leading the fish to the boat and on and on - a fish that will stay around for two minutes and then eat a bait being splashed on the surface? That is the definition of a suicidal muskie

I know his 8 tactics were very cheesy at best, looked like nascar on morphine to me.
but I didnt see the fish hot on his bait tho at first tho. no where suicidal till the commotion.
didnt have my polarized glasses on at my desk tho

i had a fish in canada hang out next to the boat for 10 minutes, go round and round, I dropped a jig in the water in front of him, he'd follow that too, breathing the rubber in occaisonally, but not quite enough to hook.
finally as the boat beached itself, he just settled down on the rock to sun himself,
allowing me to take a picture of him with the jig in front of his snoot.
dont have a digi image to post tho. sorry.

not every fish that hangs around for that long is a hot one. maybe just a dumb one?

Gotta agree w/ IAJustin on his assesment. If the intention was to keep that fish following then it's a perfect example of how to do that. If the intention was to actually catch that fish well... it was a great example on what NOT to do as already mentioned.

If that fish was to get 'hot' it would have passed up the lure! You could tell that fish was active and with a little speed going into the 8 that fish would have ate in the first few turns.

sorry i saw something diff there, usually a suicidal fish to me hits first L turn at the boat. I couldnt really see the fish that well, maybe my resolution is bad on my puter.
so is it bad that he still caught the fish after playing with it for a while?
seems like entertainment to me...

my bad.

He actually does a better figure 8 WITH the fish AFTER he hooks it, lol. I kind of have to agree wih the others. He did end up catching the fish, but I have a feeling it would have been caught a lot quicker with a little different mechanics. I would have gotten bored by doing that many figure 8s without changing anything up.

Entertaining to watch - sure, but that's not what I'm going to try first on my next follow.

Nothing to be sorry about dogboy. People can do things how they like and Bob's boat partner earned that fish; even if it was outside the box.

I don't think fish are suicidal for hitting on the 'L' turn. Especially if you set it up before that first turn. By seeing following fish further out you can pick up speed before you come into that turn which may kick start their interests. Then going into that first turn sometimes can seal the deal for you. Years ago it took me some time to figure out how to get fish to strike boat side. I used to reel bucktails at a pretty steady pace and go into my figure 8 at pretty much the same pace. And guess what.... All I ever had was follow after follow and round and round we would go. Then onetime I got nervious as a good fish was going to swim away after a few rounds on the 8 so I whipped my bucktail around as fast as I could towards the fish... she turned around right after that darting towards my lure and sucked it down. Changed things for me after.

I wasnt supporting his caveman like figure 8'ing,
just defying the term suicidal.
suicidal to me is when they try leaping in the boat,
hitting a bait multiple times when you keep pullin the #*^@ thing away,
doing cartwheels over your topwater, ect.

eitherway, it was just something interesting to watch.

I gotta fish with some of you guys that can catch everyone that comes to the boat

Ditto to the poor figure-0 sentiments. Even Bob, tries to tell the guy to do an actual fig-8 to change his movements and mix things up, and the guy basically ignores him by sticking with the circle until doing the slap method. Even at that point, had the guy done more of a submerged zig-zag while still moving the bait forward, I doubt it would have taken that long to get hooks in it.

I had a boat leaper last summer. Had just gotten to a new spot and was fiddling with the graph when a fish jumped out of the water. She grabbed my suick which was hanging off the side of the boat about a ft above the water and continued to catch about another ft of air before landing half on the boat. Gravity put the fish back in the water as I leaped for the rod. The fight was on. She had 3 trebbles burried deep from the impact so i gave her the old doctor routine and got her back fast. I Went the rest of the day without catching another fish. She was a suicidal fish for sure. As for the movie clip, it was an ugly display of boatside 8 action but fun to watch. Thanks

I know a guy who knows a guy. Actually I know the boat partner of the guy doing the figure 8 and he's done it while we were fishing and I've seen it work.

I saw this video maybe more than a year ago and have still never tried this. A friend of mine has grandparents who muskie fish in northern WI and have for a long time. His grandma doesn't like doing figure 8s because she sits down so she does "The Dabble"...same as what the guy in the video was doing. She has caught many fish doing this.

I thought that guy was doing a pretty good figure 8 for that fish to pass it up and take "The Dabble" instead...twice actually. It'll catch on once somebody writes an article on it..."The Dabble," sequel to "Shake n Bake."

Caught a decent fish a few years back as I was slapping the weeds of my Bulldawg on the water. On third slap
the weeds were almost gone and wham!!! the fish hit.

you want suicidal....how about a 47" fish that came out of nowhere to hit a motionless double ten 5" under the surface that had been sitting there for at least 15 seconds... now that is suicidal...
clearly the figure 8 in this video isn't a "how to figure 8" but it is funny... ; )

targa, I wasnt asking for opinions on how his skills were at this point,
i asked for a link to the video to show a buddy, had seen it before, just wanted to share it...
everything works diff for everyone out there. and to say it was poor display,
thats up to you, he caught the fish, and thats all that matters.

and like I said, everyone that says they couldve caught that fish no matter what,
hahahaha, I wanna see you boat everyone that follows n hangs around the boat for eternity.
some are just dumb. and you have to do dumb stuff to get them to go.
kudos to him trying something diff other than the nascar approach.

my winter chill pill is thawing at the moment, i'll let you know when it starts working.

Actually, Years ago, late 80's on Pewaukee there was a small group of guys that did the bucktail slapping thing after the musky had left the follow. And several of the fish reappeared and hit the figure 8. This is not new to the musky world. Just another trick if all else fails.  BELIEVE IT OR NOT!!! Time on the water man!!!
