I just found a good deal on a brand new 522C Lowrance. I currently own the 520C with the internal gps.

Can the two be networked?
Does running two units (one with internal/one with external antenna) cause any issues?

Thanks!

the internal gps cannot be networked so you will have to still use the puck. You will also have to go into your menu on the one with the internal gps and set you primary gps to the puck. It's really not as hard as it sounds. The only thing that you can do with the networking is share waypoints and control the lighting on both units with just one unit. It's ok but it could be way better. I would suggest connecting them through the ethernet ports if you have that option on those units, because then you could also share sonar information. Just a thought.

After reading into it a little more it looks like it will not be an issue. You mentioned linking the two with the ethernet ports which is a option I do have. What is the advantage of being able to share the same sonar? Also, I have a lot of icons marked on my current unit. Will that information transfer to new unit also (same as a waypoint).

Thanks!

The icons that you have in an existing unit will not transfer. You will have to make new ones.
The advantage to being able to share sonar is when you have 2 units and 2 transducers (one on/in the trolling motor, and one on the transom) You will be able to see what both transducers are seeing at the same time on the same screen. If you have a longer boat there are times when this will really come in handy. i,e. When you are woking your boat perpendicular to a steep dropping shoreline/weedline.

Welldriller is correct. In order to get a waypoint to show up on both units, you have to have both units turned on.

In order to choose which transducer you want both units to read, you have to use the yellow ethernet cable. The reason for being able to do this is or why you would want to do this is a lot of times when your running two units that close together, you usually get interference in the way of vertical lines. By using the yellow ethernet cable, you can choose your bow ducer or your transom ducer to read on both units simultaneously. This is a great feature during late fall and your running sucker lines in deep water, you can actually pick the sucker up perfectly without any interference.

Thanks for the information guys. I'll play with it this weekend in the driveway. We're having a heat wave here in minnesota (40 degrees) this week. I have a lot of weedlines marked on my current unit with icons so thats dissapointing if the two units will not share that information.

Thanks!

Can you copy the waypoints/icons from one unit to an SD card and then upload them to the other unit?

That's a good question. I never thought of that. You could try it.

I'm sure you can use the card and do that. I do that between my 2 522's. 520 is same unit except external. I would be stunned if you couldn't. Also swap points with a friends h2o i-finder. Way easier and MUCH cheaper.

That's what I thought too Tom. I didn't think it mattered what unit(s) you were moving the data between. That's what you do when you fill your units up too. Just load the icons/waypoints for where you are going to fish and off you go.

Where do you purchase the SD cards your refering to? Is this a purchase from lowrance or where? You can tell i'm green with all this new technology so the feedback is sure helpful.

Thanks!

Any electronic store, walmart, etc. They are the same as some digital camera cards. Read manual for exact. I think it is sd-mmc( 1 gb will do) Just take out lake chip card(if have one), insert sd card and follow directions or go find info in the menus. Can't remember way, but it takes like 30 seconds to figure out.

Something else to consider with those units is to go to lowrance and get the latest software updates. They say it helps in shallow water. My opinion- not so sure.

I hooked up the second unit today and it works like a charm. Picked up a SD card like you guys suggested and it transfered all of my waypoints and icons to the new unit. Very simple and i'm relieved that i could transfer all that information to the other unit. Many days on the water are spent marking up lakes.

Thanks for the help guys!
