At the end of the 2009 season, my hydraulic stearing went completey out, you can push the 225 with one finger to the right and to the left while standing in the boat ramp parking lot and it takes about 10-12 complete turns of the wheel to get it to turn....and then when it does it motor simply "falls" to the side.

Any idea as to why this happened or how I can fix it? It's not old, it's a 2008 boat.

You need to bleed the system I'd imagine. Before it totally went out was the wheel kind of jerky? If it was then you just have to bleed the system. If it happened all at once you may have a bad seal. I haven't had to fix that one yet.

What you do to bleed the system is get some of the special Seastar fluid (most marine dealers have it), hook up the hose and start filling up the fixture that is probably on the dash by your steering wheel. Once it's full you're going to need to bleed the system. Turn the wheel/motor all the way to one side. Then loosen the fitting on the opposite side. Turn the wheel until the motor goes all the way to that side. Tighten the fitting and loosen the one on the other side and repeat.

***be sure that you are still feeding the system fluid during this process or else you'll have to start over again****

Repeat until the steering is smooth.

I had this problem last summer.
Had the seals replaced and new fluid added, and now everything works just fine.
Leaking seals need to be replaced soon, before more damage is done, Trust Me on this one.

Oddly enough or sadly, I had two SeaStar Units leak within five years. I contacted SeaStar and they asked I send in a few pictures. Upon request, it was noted that the wrong spacer was installed at the factory. They sent me a new unit at no cost. Then two years later (currently) I had the same issue with leaking seals. Again, I contacted SeaStar knowing I had to fix the problem, but didn't want the same concern in two more years. I followed the same procedure and sent in a few pictures. At first they (SeaStar technician) thought stray current could cause pitting on the shaft. However, after more time they identified the current unit was made while a machine at the factory was not properly cleaning all the metal particles from the shafts. These particles scratched the shaft, which I was told caused the seals to fail. Even better, I was sent another brand new one, which is waiting to be installed. Upon talking to the Yamaha technician working on my boat, he shared other technicians were noticing that other leaking units had red power steering fluid. It's unsure if there is a connection, but he suggested to use the light tan color, which SeaStar sent with the new unit. Last time they sent the red fluid. My suggestion, contact SeaStar, be prepared to take a few pictures and use different fluid.
