Do any of you guys own a satelite phone? I have some basic questions that maybe some of you could help with. How much do they cost to purchase?
Do you pay buy the minute or have some type of account? Where can I even purchase one?

If you don't have a phone how do you handle the extreme excursions other then the obvious (iteneraries and such).

Anyone use or have a self navigation beacon and if so will they work in Canadian Provinces?
Thanks, its never to soon to prepare.

I have been on trips where no phone service was available. I rented a phone online. As time progresses, the phones get cheaper, and soon you may be able to get a sat phone for the same cost as a cel. But for now, I don't spend much time offshore or in countries or jungles with no cel service, so I rent when I'm in those spots. It usually costs 200-400 bucks depending on the plan.

Try http://www.outfittersatellite.com/

I have rented a phone from these guys in the past. This company was good to work with. However, most satellite phones have poor communications.
