Posts: 134 Location: East TN | So my brother is planning on buying him a rod to replace the one that broke on him a few weeks ago. It will probably double as a catfish rod sometimes for him, as he fishes for lots of different fish other than musky. He asked me what might be a good choice, and I haven't quite found anything yet other than finding a good deal on a used rod(which I haven't really came across). I'm thinking something rated up to 3 ounces would do him fine. Just can't really seem to find something to suit his needs. Since its so close to the holidays, he's not wanting to spend a fortune.....something in the 50-60 dollar range at most. I've kinda looked at the Shimano Convergence Musky rods, but haven't found them under 69.99, and thats only online as well. So any of you guys got any suggestions as to what he might look into?

Posts: 1728 Location: Mt. Zion, IL | Call bass pro shops outlet. A friend of mine got a Pete Maina 7'6" musky rod for 20 bucks brand new. It is almost right across the street from the headquarters in Springfield, MO, but with shipping it would be in your price range. I have one of these rods, and while it is rated from 2-10 oz, it is more suited for lighter baits IMO. It has a forgiving tip and has thrown mag super D's, cranks, 9" swim shads, 6" swim shads, and a 1 oz xrap.

Posts: 90 | Shimano has another line of Musky Rods, the Sojourn, they retail for $39.99. I couldn't tell you anything about them other than the price, but it might be worth looking at. http://www.histackleboxshop.com/Sojourn-Muskie-Casting-Rods-s/1099.... Posts: 145 | I have a south bend trophy tamer and I honestly love that rod. Some day when I can afford something more I will but right now I am thinking I am going to be getting another come christmas or birthday. They run about $40 at walmart. I also have a medium heavy ugly stick that ran about the same, sure they are cheap poles but honestly I have caught many fish on them and have not had any problems.

Posts: 313 Location: On your favorite spot | Trophy Tamer, BPS Pete Maina, and Gander Mountain Brand are all great rods for the price, might have trouble finding the Trophy Tamer long enough to suit your needs but the other two are made up to 8.5' I think.

The Pete Maina's aren't in his price range. How much do the Gander Mountain rods typically run? And do they offer different "series" ones, some being cheaper than others?

My bad - didn't see his price range - I do believe that Gander does have some decent sticks in the $50-70 range as well. If they made an 8 foot Trophy Tamer I'd have a bunch of them.

I've been googling them and only found one site that shows them(Whitecaps Tackle).

I have a trophy tamer too that I just love. I got mine off the website www.muskytales.com. It runs around $50 even though they used to be cheaper.

Posts: 135 Location: Irvine, KY | I have two 7 ft BPS G6 series muskie rods. one is a MH the other XH. $30 bucks, havent had any issues with them yet, I dont think they make the XH anymore though... have to go down to the 6'3" for that, unless you find some older stock like I did. A buddy of mine has a sojourn, I personally like it a lot and if I dont decide to splurge on a Compre for my next rod, I will probaly go with the sojourn. Ive never seen the convergence under 70 either. FYI I catfish at night during the summer months and my 2 BPS rods double for that. plenty of backbone, ive landed several 40#+ fish with them and they worked great for that purpose as well.

Posts: 134 Location: East TN | Thanks for all the tips guys. I think I may have found a good deal on a used Convergence. If that one doesn't go through, I think he may look into one of those Sojourn's. Thanks again.

In 2007 I bought a muskie rod in Upstate NY, on sale, for $29.95. The rod blank is graphite and not bad. The cork handle necks down toward the butt; and this I don't like. (Maybe this can be corrected with tape.) The rod will handle up to 3 oz. baits. The brand name is Pinnacle.

Posts: 375 | this may not be what you want to hear but...buy a $50.00 musky rod and soon it may not do what you want it to do...then buy a $150.00 musky rod and soon it still may not do what you want it to do...buy a $200.00 musky rod and it, as you progress into this crazy world of musky fishing, it still does not do what you want it to do! wow...if my math is correct you now have $400.00 invested in 3 rods that you are not totally happy with! call keith at proedge rods and discuss the st. croix legend rods with him! by the way, keith has built a few legends for me and i receive no discounts from him or st. croix! so what is a "cheap" rod? the best "value" is never the lowest cost! Posts: 145 | I guess the reason that I currently have "cheap" rods is because I don't have the money to spend at this time my family needs food, clothing and a roof over their head so daddy has to sacrifice. Someday when I am able, I will buy a St. Croix but for right now I am very happy with what I have. Besides my poles do what I want them to, they throw my lures where I want them to they allow me to work the bait how I want to and they catch fish. Besides, you can catch them with a snoopy pole if you can cast accuratly, know how to work your lure, and can locate the fish.

I hear a lot about the pro-edge rods and whatnot. But I really don't see the advantages to the average angler. I have a couple two-piece Mania 8'6" rods from Bass Pro. I have tons of feel, the balance is great, and they haven't changed since day one. They're also tanks...they'll last forever. They are not "cheap" rods. They are great rods that are less expensive. The Gander IM8 rods are also awesome for the price. Are the pro-edge rods better? Of course they are. Are they better enough to justify spending three times as much??? I don't think so. There are too many good rods that are medium in value that will perform beyond what the majority of us anglers are capable of. My advice to someone that's getting into musky fishing and plan on fishing more than a few days a year is to get a decent rod. Not the lest expensive. Not the most expensive. Get something that will allow you to fish effectively without blowing too much dough...something between $75-$125.

Posts: 134 Location: East TN | I didn't really mean to start a debate here or anything. My brother(like me) Can't afford to drop 100 bucks anytime he wants, so I asked what is a cheaper alternative. And also, Like I said, He doesn't plan on musky fishing all the time, just occasionally when he goes with me. Luckily i've found him a good deal on a used Shimano Convergence, which I think will do him fine. Thanks to everyone that replied with good intentions.

Posts: 68 | I just bought a Quantum Alliance Musky Rod (7'6" H, 20-50lbs., 2-6oz.) from Cabela's for $24.99. It's normally 79.99, but Cabela's is having a huge sale in their Cabela's Club Members section on all the Quantum Alliance rods. For anyone looking at getting a rod for their wife, kid or just another to have around (and is a Cabela's Club Member), I was pretty impressed with it. I'm a newbie and don't have a ton of great gear, so impressive to me is probably no where near impressive to most of you here. This is only my second real musky rod. My other is a Fish Eagle II, which I like a lot except for it being short, and to me this rod seems very comparable as far as balance and feel. Just thought I'd let you all know. And sorry for bumping an old thread, but I didn't want to start another topic on the same subject matter. Edited by Kleck 2/21/2010 11:21 PM

Location: Northern Wisconsin | the gander mountain rods are great! last time i checked they had many different types of musky specific rods ranging from im6, im7, im8, to the newer tournament musky. I know the im6 and im7 are under 70 bucks. they are usually on sale as well so you can probably get the torunament musky or im8 for around 70. They just had 30 percent off at my local gander mtn. so that would put the 100 dollar tournament at 70 bucks. They are also having a huge spring sale right now so they have tons of new models in and might be having sales on older models. its worth checking out. I have 3 gander rods and they have all been good for me and have actually used them for flat head fishing under a dam before.

Gander Mountain. Guide Series. Muskie. I have three of them: IM8, IM7, and IM6. They cost me about $80, $70, and $30 respectively. The IM6--which I bought for jerk baits--was on sale for $29.95. It usually runs for $49.95. These work for me.

Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | Good old fashion cat fishing rod! That is what I use for trolling. Got my last one in the Cabelas Bargain cave for $8.47! 9' rod too. Bit of a broom stick but it works for throwing big swimbaits too. Edited by Tackle Industries 2/22/2010 9:42 PM
