Posts: 906 Location: Warroad, Mn | FSF's post of a 19" lure has got me wondering? How many of you have caught a fish on lures over what's considered "normal". I use 13" at times for trolling and 13's for casting. Just pick the biggest lure size you've ever caught a muskie on. Doug Johnson

Posts: 717 Location: Grand Rapids, MI | I picked the 12"-15". I throw a lot of Mag/Pounder Dawgs. I'm not even sure what a Pounder is when you're pulling it through the water??? 21"?

Posts: 2691 Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | My biggest fish to date was on the biggest lure I ever trolled. It was over 15'' long. Would like to get back to that water sometime soon. Big fish can be caught on small baits in Spring and Summer but in Fall they like the big stuff. 11 more weekends to go!!!

Posts: 906 Location: Warroad, Mn | I perhaps worded the poll wrong, but maybe not. I'll bet that most folks who have every caught a muskie and enter they'll be lots of people how have caught there biggest fish on smaller lures, just because that's what they use most. I'm of the opinion that big lures catch big fish, but I suspect there's a maximum size that's fishable and practical. I was going to add another category which as 15"+ but hit the wrong button. I've caught a few muskies on very big lures also, but I don't use them a whole lot because they are almost unfishable. I can't figure out how I'd fish a 19" surface lure (even though it looks pretty snazzy). Too big to cast I would guess. Doesn't seem to go under water, and I've have to find some where that muskies would hit a trolled 19" surface lure at a very slow speed. Even on the LOTWs after 45 year of trying I can't think of many spots that I could do this. The lure looks great and a lot like a northern pike swimming along. I wonder how many muskies will like that? Doug Johnson

Posts: 684 Location: Sycamore, IL | The biggest lure that I have caught a muskie on is a 10 inch suick...but I just don't have/ throw a lot of lures bigger...plus , I find it uncomfortable to cast the large lures that I have for any length of time...if I trolled I'm sure it would be a different story...I would say the majority of my baits are in the 6-8 inch range. Location: Ohio | The majority of the fish I catch are on big lures 8"s and 10's in the spring which is early where I live (March and April) and up size from there, not that I don't ever fish smaller baits but it takes extreme wheather for that. I agree with Doug big fish eat big food. What is small to a big fish in spring is really big to most for that time of year. 10 Inch baits in spring for 30 pound fish is like 4 or 5 inch baits to a 10 or 12 pound fish, so it only goes to reason what is big to you may be small to a truley big fish.

Posts: 366 | That does make me curious as well, but besides the size factor, I'd like to know how many guys have caught muskies on life-like swim baits like that. I have a SPRO swimbait, and it is only about 8", but much like that pike, it looks incredible in the water. It was $50, which is the most expensive bait in my tackle box and one of the few I paid retail for. Now I've thrown it quite a bit in the past couple years since I've bought it, but I don't think that I have had a fish take a real look at it yet. So, is anyone doing well on swimbaits, or have they already done what they are supposed to do, which is catch fishermen, much like myself? And on the size factor, what about Killer Eels and the Giant Witch? Those things are 16", I believe, anyone having overwhelming success with them? Ryan

The most realistic swimming action I have ever seen. (Hardbaits such as Spro, Castaic, etc can not compete with plastic in my opinion). Plus they are $7

Posts: 1663 Location: Kodiak, AK | I like big baits, and also subscribe to "big bait, big fish." I throw the usuals- 10's, plastics, 10" Jakes, Believers, and my smallest fish last year was 39. My fiance fishes with me but she's fishing small Rapala's and smaller baits, and she was catching (along with the bass and pike she was fishing for) small muskies less than 30". I know big fish will take the small stuff, but throwing big baits seem to weed out the smaller fish and I just have more confidence in them. And of course, confidence is key.

Posts: 2320 Location: SE, WI. | Doug; Caught a 49 5/8" on the woods this year on a Hellkat. When pulled, this lure extends to 15-18" depending how the tail is cut.

Posts: 540 Location: MN | This fall i fell in love with mamouth sues, 2lb dawgs and 14'' jakes and so did the fish. I think with the tail pulled out a mamouth sue is 22-24''long.
